Eighteen months prior, Tyreek Hill consented to a revised contract with the Miami Dolphins. He had just completed two consecutive seasons with more than 1,700 receiving yards and was a pivotal figure in one of the league’s top offenses. In the early hours of President’s Day 2026, several weeks before free agency commences on March 11, the Dolphins released Hill.

The organization now finds itself in a significantly different position than before. It boasts a new head coach, Jeff Hafley, and a new general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan. The team has missed the postseason in successive seasons, following two prior appearances. Hill, similarly, has not sustained the early success he achieved with the Dolphins, failing to reach 1,000 receiving yards in 2023 and being sidelined for most of 2024 after dislocating a knee and suffering an ACL tear.

Hill’s release was anticipated as this offseason approached, yet its timing caught many by surprise. What prompted the Dolphins to let go of the five-time first-team All-Pro, and what kind of interest might he generate in free agency?

ESPN NFL Nation Dolphins correspondent Marcel Louis-Jacques and NFL insider Jeremy Fowler offer their insights on all essential information.

What led to the Dolphins releasing Tyreek Hill?

Hill finalized a four-year, $120 million extension with the Dolphins in 2022, and later agreed to a modified agreement in 2024 that elevated his guaranteed earnings to $106.5 million — an NFL benchmark for a skill position athlete. While he had no guaranteed funds due in 2026, the wide receiver still carried a substantial $51.1 million cap charge this season.

These cap figures were manageable when Hill was performing at a high level, but his last two seasons were a stark contrast to his initial two in Miami. Throughout 2024 and 2025, he accumulated 102 receptions for 1,224 yards and 7 touchdowns. These statistics were undoubtedly affected by the dislocated knee he sustained in Week 4 of the 2025 season, an injury from which the 31-year-old might find it challenging to fully recover. Sullivan was steadfast in his commitment to establishing a renewed ethos within the Dolphins’ organization, which typically entails significant alterations to the roster.

Sullivan champions development through the draft, and Hill’s presence on Miami’s roster contradicted that philosophy. Although he was highly productive during his initial two seasons, acquiring Hill via trade was one of several actions that constrained the Dolphins’ draft capabilities. The draft capital is now a sunk cost, but Sullivan nonetheless initiated the process of leaving his personal imprint on this roster. — Louis-Jacques

Was there a particular reason the Dolphins opted to release Hill now, weeks ahead of free agency’s commencement?

Miami is getting an early start on a significant overhaul by executing a series of cuts a week prior to the NFL combine. Hill was among four Dolphins players released Monday, which freed up nearly $70 million in cap room for the team.

Hill met the three primary criteria for players destined to be cut: age (31), injury status, and an exorbitant salary. Consequently, the Dolphins made the straightforward choice now, with a new leadership less inclined to prioritize sentiment. Sullivan and Hafley comprehend the magnitude of this roster reconstruction endeavor and are fully embracing it. Hill embodies the past. — Fowler

How will Hill’s release impact the Dolphins’ salary cap availability this year and in subsequent seasons?

Hill’s immediate departure will result in roughly $28 million in dead cap for the Dolphins this season, while simultaneously saving them approximately $23 million. They had the option to distribute the dead cap hit over the next two years if he had been designated as a post-June 1 release, but ending his contract at once essentially permits them to settle their theoretical credit card bill promptly instead of deferring the payments.

His release also leaves Miami with one of the NFL’s most sparse wide receiver groups. Jaylen Waddle remains under contract but also represents the Dolphins’ most valuable trade asset should they decide to deepen this rebuilding effort.

Prioritizing the addition of pass-catching options will be crucial this offseason, as their offensive scheme is currently not configured to adequately support their forthcoming quarterback. — Louis-Jacques

What might Hill’s free-agent prospects entail?

Hill stands out as one of the rare athletes who has maintained his elite quickness into his thirties — a velocity that kept him among the league’s premier pass catchers. His substantial knee injury could jeopardize that swiftness, and Hill himself openly discussed the prospect of retirement last October.

Nevertheless, Hill might just be the exceptional player capable of recovering from this setback and continuing to make impactful plays. A potential return to Kansas City warrants consideration. The Chiefs’ offense hasn’t quite been the same since the organization traded Hill in 2022.

A reunion with Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel also appears logical. Hill was ideally suited for McDaniel’s tactical approach. While Hill’s peak earning days might be behind him, he will likely still secure a respectable agreement. — Fowler
