Jake Michaels is a Melbourne-based athletic journalist who has been employed by ESPN since 2013. He mainly covers the AFL, but his tasks have led him globally, reporting on diverse events, from Formula One and Grand Slam tennis to championship boxing, global basketball, and the Olympic Games.

Jai Opetaia ought to be the preeminent figure in Australian boxing; the chasm between him and the runner-up is considerable. This cruiserweight monarch, originating from Sydney but competing from the Gold Coast, has vanquished every adversary courageous enough to enter the squared circle with him, securing the IBF and Ring global championship belts, thereby cementing his position among the sport’s contemporary giants.

Across his 29 professional contests, Opetaia has achieved 23 KOs and claimed victory in the remaining six matches via decision. He has safeguarded a global championship seven times, recently earning the third spot in Max Kellerman’s global pound-for-pound rankings of top pugilists, and, should circumstances align favorably, he might soon be poised to consolidate the cruiserweight category.

Nevertheless, notwithstanding his exceptional talent, the honors he is accumulating, and the trajectory he is establishing, Opetaia remains shamefully overlooked by the majority of the Australian populace. This trend has persisted for numerous years, with greater focus appearing directed towards the spectacle fights involving former athletes, past glories, and individuals unable to substantiate their incessant boasts.

“Our purpose isn’t to become household names or the most celebrated combatant,” Opetaia confides to ESPN. “We shun theatrics. We remain focused on our own course, you understand.”

“The press thrives on sensationalism. Our preference is simply diligent effort and fulfilling our obligations. While it may not garner as much attention as the theatrics, such is the reality. Our sole ambition is to achieve undisputed status, then unwind with our loved ones.”

The objective of consolidating titles has occupied Opetaia’s thoughts prominently over the last two years. Subsequent to multiple unsuccessful endeavors to arrange a match with either Gilberto Ramirez (WBA/WBO) or Noel Mikaelian (WBC), he chose to ink an alluring agreement with Zuffa Boxing — a fresh combat enterprise launched by Dana White and Turki Al-Sheikh, operating on a comparable framework to the UFC.

Opetaia is set to commence his first bout under Zuffa Boxing this Saturday night [Sunday afternoon AEDT] in Las Vegas, where he will contend against American Brandon Glanton (21-3, 18 KOs) for the promotion’s premier global championship. In congruence with the initial three Zuffa Boxing spectacles staged in the first quarter of 2026, Opetaia and Glanton are slated to top a Meta APEX fight program, available for streaming on Paramount+.

A segment of boxing enthusiasts might perceive Opetaia’s transition to Zuffa Boxing as an equivalent change, while others might deem it a regression. However, the Australian firmly asserts that his pivotal career choice will pave the way for the undisputed status he has intensely desired.

“Zuffa Boxing has revolutionized the sport. These are the events one must participate in,” Opetaia clarifies. “[Prior to my signing] the possibility of unification was discussed. Naturally, we have a task to accomplish beforehand, but they assured me they could secure the WBC title for me. The WBO and WBA organizations are proving somewhat more challenging to negotiate with, yet I am convinced that if we continue to triumph, these contests are inevitable.

“We are discussing undisputed championship status here. If our goal in this sport isn’t to achieve undisputed recognition, then what exactly are we striving for? I believe that once only one more match remains to attain undisputed status, whether it involves me or another contender, it simply must occur. I sense Zuffa will represent a significant phase in this current boxing period.”

Opetaia’s inaugural Zuffa Boxing contest follows three months after his previous fight, where he successfully defended his Ring cruiserweight title for the seventh time and the IBF belt for the fourth time. Opetaia incapacitated Huseyin Cinkara with a devastating eighth-round knockout, rendering the German experienced fighter unconscious on the mat for numerous minutes. Cinkara was subsequently transported to a medical facility where imaging confirmed a fractured neck.

Meanwhile, Glanton competed in two matches during 2025. The 33-year-old Atlantan, who has been on the verge of a global championship for a significant portion of his career, suffered a defeat by unanimous decision to ex-WBO champion Chris Billam-Smith in April, prior to recovering with a sixth-round TKO triumph over Marcus Browne in October.

“I recognize his resilience. I acknowledge his power. And I am aware he intends to engage in combat,” Opetaia commented regarding Glanton, even though he enters the contest as an overwhelming favorite according to wagering experts. “Irrespective of my opponent, we ready ourselves for battle. We have been training intensely and are prepared. I am utterly primed!

“Ideally, I would defeat Brandon, subsequently secure the WBC title, followed by the WBO and WBA. Mikaelian currently holds the WBC. Ramirez possesses the WBO and WBA. Ramirez is slated to face David Benavidez, and our aspiration is to challenge the victor of that bout before the year concludes.”
