It appears Amazon is re-entering the mobile phone market. Over a decade following the online retail behemoth’s discontinuation of its unsuccessful initial venture, the Fire Phone, the corporation is now crafting a novel mobile device internally referred to as “Transformer,” Reuters reported, citing confidential sources.
This gadget is under development by the firm’s Hardware and Software unit, and it is anticipated to incorporate customizable functionalities designed to streamline interaction with Amazon’s integrated software package, such as Amazon Shopping, Prime Video, and Prime Music, as per the dispatch.
Furthermore, the handset would accommodate Alexa, the intelligent domicile helper that Amazon has been significantly funding, bolstering its AI prowess and extending its functionality to encompass a majority of the corporation’s gadgets. Artificial intelligence functionalities are reportedly a primary emphasis for the mobile device, considered internally a strategy to incentivize Amazon’s clientele to utilize its AI solutions, as reported by Reuters.
Development of the handset is attributed to a somewhat novel segment of the Gadgets division known as ZeroOne, which is helmed by J Allard, an erstwhile Microsoft official instrumental in the creation of the Xbox.
This revelation surfaces while Amazon has been committing fully to artificial intelligence, having recently infused $50 billion into OpenAI, and forecasting $200 billion in capital outlay for its AI, semiconductor, and automation endeavors by 2026.
The corporation dedicated over a year to overhauling its virtual assistant, Alexa, incorporating generative AI capabilities, with its ultimate debut this February as Alexa+. This virtual aid preserves its connected home proficiency and is presently able to accomplish many feats achievable by other AI conversational bots — including mapping out a journey, modifying a communal planner, discovering and storing cooking guides in a collection, providing cinematic advisories, aiding in scholastic tasks, investigating a subject, and beyond.
Amazon chose not to provide a statement.
