Amazon is unveiling a novel capability that will enable users to modify the character of its AI assistant, Alexa+. On Wednesday, the corporation debuted three distinct Alexa+ temperament profiles — Brief, Chill, and Sweet — designed to alter the AI assistant’s vocal delivery.
With the Brief mode, Alexa’s replies will be more concise and straightforward, whereas the Chill mode will prompt Alexa to converse akin to a relaxed companion. Activating the Sweet style, conversely, will cause Alexa to adopt a more amiable and spirited demeanor, providing affirmation and optimism, Amazon states.
The concept of instilling an AI with a distinct character has presented a complex challenge for model makers.
Among certain chatbot users, an agreeable and validating AI model, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, prompted some individuals to foster an unhealthy reliance upon the system. In certain instances, it even intensified pre-existing psychological difficulties for users, culminating in critical situations or even self-harm, numerous legal complaints have claimed.
Nevertheless, individuals interacting with chatbots have demonstrated a desire to govern the AI’s responses, going so far as to compose bespoke directives to define the AI’s character. In response to this demand, OpenAI debuted novel ChatGPT functionalities in December which permit users to modify the AI’s fundamental demeanor and vocal character, including aspects like its amiability, fervor, and emoji usage. Nonetheless, some users express dissatisfaction, asserting that the most recent model is inherently overly comforting.
Amazon states that Alexa’s fresh styles are founded upon five attributes that shape its character: articulation, emotional transparency, conventionality, straightforwardness, and wit. Every style embodies particular degrees of all these five elements. For example, the Brief mode is not merely succinct; it is likewise informal, straightforward, and employs scant wit, the corporation notes.
To alter Alexa’s mode, one can either address the AI helper through a device, such as an Echo smart speaker, or locate the capability within the Alexa application’s Device Preferences, listed under “Personality Style.”
The corporation indicates that these three modes represent merely the initial rollout, with additional options slated for future release.
