Just prior to 2 PM ET on Monday, the Artemis II contingent surpassed a benchmark established five and a half decades earlier by the unfortunate Apollo 13 endeavor. Having journeyed more than 248,655 miles, they have now traversed a greater expanse from our planet than any prior human explorers. This significant event was commemorated with a lunar crater naming ceremony, culminating in the entire team sharing an embrace while in orbit around the Moon.
The team aboard Artemis II put forth suggestions for appellations for a pair of lunar craters. The initial one was christened after their vessel, Integrity. The subsequent naming carried a deeper personal resonance. “Many years ago, as we embarked on this expedition and formed our tightly-knit astronaut family, we experienced the profound loss of a cherished individual,” remarked mission specialist Jeremy Hansen during NASA’s live broadcast. “Her name was Carroll, Reid’s partner, and the parent of Katie and Ellie.”
Hansen characterized a specific lunar depression as “a luminous area on the Moon” before proclaiming, “Our desire is to name it Carroll.” Once Hansen finished this declaration, the entire crew clustered together inside Integrity for a group embrace. Carroll Wiseman, the spouse of commander Reid Wiseman, sadly succumbed to cancer in 2020 at 46 years of age.
