David Sacks, the prominent venture capitalist and technology magnate who had emerged as Silicon Valley’s chief champion within the White House and a principal designer of its assertive artificial intelligence policy strategies, disclosed on Thursday that he had ceased to be a special government employee — and consequently, no longer served as President Donald Trump’s Specific Consultant for AI and Crypto.
Sacks’ formal designation as an SGE enabled him to operate concurrently in the commercial realm and for the public sector, yet for a maximum of 130 days, prompting inquiries regarding his continued tenure over a year following his designation. However, in a conversation with Bloomberg Television addressing the White House’s new legislative blueprint for an AI structure, Sacks disclosed that he had now “exhausted his allotted period,” and would henceforth direct his efforts toward co-leading the Presidential Advisory Board on Science and Technology (PCAST).
Just days prior, the White House had unveiled multiple fresh designations to the consultative body, encompassing other technology leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg, Marc Andreessen, Jensen Huang, and Sergey Brin. Michael Kratsios, the director of the Executive Mansion’s Bureau of Science and Technology Policy, is also slated to serve as co-leader.
“I believe proceeding in my capacity as co-leader of PCAST, I can now offer counsel regarding not solely AI, but on a broader spectrum of technological subjects,” he informed Ed Ludlow, the interviewer. When queried, Sacks specified that his function would not entail liaison with federal governmental bodies: “It’s designed to provide counsel to the head of state and to the White House, to the presidential administrative departments. So, yes, we’re going to examine matters, formulate proposals. And that’s the primary objective, is guidance.” (The White House did not promptly respond to an inquiry for commentary.)
As the AI and cryptocurrency commissioner, Sacks, who had orchestrated a significant tech industry fundraising event for Trump in 2024, enjoyed unhindered entry to the President’s private office and exercised considerable influence in molding the administration’s tech strategy. However, his assertive method of policy formulation unintentionally guided the Trump administration into several disfavored political conflicts. His endeavor to enforce a sweeping prohibition on state-level AI regulations, both in Congress and then by executive order, estranged GOP state leaders and MAGA adherents instead, and rendered numerous other prospective policy successes politically unpalatable. “He was unsuccessful in achieving supremacy. He pushed the White House into a societal conflict against its own voters. He prevented it from securing straightforward achievements such as child protection. He has been a policy catastrophe,” Michael Toscano, the managing director for the traditionalist Family Research Institute, communicated to The Verge. “He is perhaps solely accountable for the White House forfeiting its popular credentials.”
Nonetheless, during the previous week, he committed an act perceptibly more detrimental by Trump administration benchmarks: he openly reproached the head of state, stating on his audio broadcast All In that the president ought to discover a “way out” of his conflict with Iran.
Throughout his subsequent tenure, Trump has often downgraded his most contentious or mortifying designees rather than terminating their employment. Last year, Mike Waltz was relieved of his duties as National Security Consultant due to his involvement in Signal-gate and reappointed as United Nations Envoy. Lately, Kristi Noem, the past Chief of Domestic Security who supervised ICE’s forceful takeover of Minneapolis which resulted in the fatalities of two demonstrators, was reappointed as a particular emissary for a program called the “Americas’ Protectorate”.
