Gumloop lands $50M from Benchmark to turn every employee into an AI agent builder

When Max Brodeur-Urbas established Gumloop in mid-2023, his primary objective was to assist non-technical personnel in streamlining recurring operations through artificial intelligence. At that juncture, the notion of AI agents remained largely experimental and susceptible to errors.

As AI technology has progressively advanced, so too has Gumloop’s array of offerings.

The enterprise asserts its current capability to empower teams at organizations such as Shopify, Ramp, Gusto, Samsara, Instacart, and Opendoor to implement dependable AI agents. These agents independently manage intricate, multi-stage tasks, completely eliminating the need for an engineer.

Staff members can distribute the agents they develop among their co-workers, fostering a cumulative impact that accelerates internal mechanization. “They become engrossed, they commence building additional agents, and then suddenly, the entire enterprise inherently embraces AI,” Brodeur-Urbas conveyed to TechCrunch.

As companies hasten to integrate artificial intelligence, Benchmark general partner Everett Randell believes the crucial element for triumph resides in equipping every worker with advanced AI capabilities. Gumloop’s intuitive agent-builder stands as an illustration of the kind of instrument that will unlock this potential.

Consequently, Randell, who joined Benchmark last October from Kleiner Perkins, opted to spearhead a $50 million Series B funding round for Gumloop. This transaction, Randell’s inaugural venture with his current company, saw involvement from Nexus VP, First Round Capital, Y Combinator, Box Group, The Cannon Project, and Shopify.

Although Gumloop wasn’t proactively pursuing fresh capital, the nascent company determined this was the opportune moment to accelerate growth. For Brodeur-Urbas, collaborating with Benchmark—the firm responsible for successes such as eBay, Uber, and Dropbox—was an obvious choice.

While Brodeur-Urbas formerly intended to ‘create a lean, billion-dollar enterprise,’ the escalating requests from corporate customers have necessitated his decision to assemble a specialized sales team and expand his technical development staff, he stated.

Gumloop is far from the sole participant contending to transform every information professional into an AI agent creator. The startup encounters formidable rivalry from well-known automation solutions like Zapier and n8n, as well as niche agent development tools like Dust. Even pivotal AI research institutions are joining the contest. As an example, Anthropic’s Claude Co-Work enables individuals to craft self-governing agents without any coding required.

However, Randell is convinced that Gumloop outperforms all its competitors. While conducting his comprehensive review, he uncovered that at least one of the company’s customers had embraced Gumloop rather naturally.

When Randell inquired of a Chief Technology Officer regarding their selection of Gumloop, the reply proved insightful. The company had provided staff unfettered entry to Gumloop in conjunction with two rival offerings. Half a year subsequent, the outcomes were evident: personnel utilized Gumloop on a daily or weekly basis, whereas the rival instruments remained unused, Randell told TechCrunch.

The factor behind Gumloop’s significant traction, as per Randell, is its negligible learning difficulty. “You can commence creating agents and automating workflows right away,” he remarked.

Although numerous AI nascent companies are concerned that core AI models might duplicate identical features and render them obsolete, Randell firmly believes that Gumloop’s model-independent methodology is exactly what will continue to draw clients.

As paradigms further develop, a particular one might excel over another for a distinct operation. So, Gumloop offers the adaptability to select the most appropriate model for the task at hand at any given moment.

A further aspect making model autonomy appealing, as stated by Randell, is cost. “Numerous corporations possess credit allocations for OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic. Their aim is to utilize each of these,” he said

Randell’s enthusiasm for the venture fundamentally stems from the immense scale of the prospect.

“Corporate automation represents an enormous lucrative potential,” he stated. “In my opinion, it stands as the most substantial segment within corporate AI.”
