When startups become a family business

In this current installment of Build Mode, we’re delving into the requisites for constructing a top-tier founding team. This week, our focus shifts to examining diverse co-founder dynamics and what it truly necessitates to establish a startup alongside one’s family. While collaborating with a family member or life partner presents significant advantages, such as inherent confidence and an “unwavering commitment” mentality, it can also engender difficulties when the entire enterprise peril originates from a single domestic unit.

Isabelle Johannessen from Build Mode recently conversed with Hala Jalwan and Alessio Tresanti, a married couple and joint founders of Rivio, an AI sourcing venture. Both Jalwan and Tresanti are firmly committed to fully devoting themselves to their ideas and have always cherished creating things together, ranging from communal gatherings to transcontinental journeys. They observed that they instinctively took basic concepts and expanded them to their grandest potential. Thus, upon conceiving the notion for Rivio, they were assured that both would be capable and prepared to dedicate entirely.

With Rivio’s expansion, they’ve gleaned two principal insights: Initially, joint founders ought to possess distinct roles. Secondly, it is prudent to introduce a third partner to act as an arbiter.

Leo Larrere serves as Rivio’s third joint founder and Chief Technology Officer. “It’s splendid because, sincerely, it integrates flawlessly into this dynamic,” Tresanti remarked regarding Larrere. “Evidently, it’s a triumvirate of founders. He likewise is the individual who introduces rationality to the discussion and can establish boundaries occasionally.”

In the latter segment of this installment, Johannessen converses with Anna Sun, the joint founder of Nowadays, an AI assistant for business event coordination, which she established with her sibling Amy soon after completing her studies at MIT. Sun elaborated on how the pair constructed their group, comprised of acquaintances and previous colleagues, and fostered an ethos rooted in fellowship. An inherent confidence exists, not solely between the siblings-turned-partners but equally throughout the entire collective.

“Being siblings, we rely on one another immensely. I recall, even earlier, when I would initiate concepts with acquaintances, you constantly sense, ‘Oh, I don’t want to infringe upon another’s domain,’ or ‘I’m unsure if this critique is excessively blunt,’” Sun stated. “However, because we were raised in the identical domestic setting, we share numerous identical principles, and we are exceptionally straightforward with each other. We do not desire to squander time.”

These dialogues illuminate how entrepreneurs can construct a genuinely productive and contented group, provided there’s a bedrock of reliance, explicitly delineated responsibility, and a readiness to manage disagreements amicably.
