This past Tuesday, the U.S.-based chip producer disclosed its intent to collaborate on the design and construction of the expansive facility. This complex is slated to furnish AI processors for two of Musk’s enterprises, SpaceX (recently consolidated with xAI) and Tesla. Musk requires artificial intelligence chips to fuel his vision of assembling a “robot army,” which will encompass autonomous vehicles and anthropomorphic machines, alongside the orbital data centers he plans to launch. SpaceX intends to execute its initial public offering later this year.

“Terafab will bridge the divide between contemporary chip production and forthcoming requirements – a cosmic future,” declares the Terafab website.

The participation of Intel lessens some of the burden on Musk to undertake the plant’s construction personally. Over recent months, the billionaire has voiced increasing urgency regarding his need for someone to establish a semiconductor fabrication plant, or “fab,” to bolster his artificial intelligence aspirations. Moreover, he has questioned whether the chip-making sector possesses the capacity to meet escalating demand. “Is it possible for others to construct these facilities?” Musk inquired during a financial results conference call earlier this year. He added, “Truly, these structures are exceedingly difficult to erect.”

The establishment of a semiconductor fabrication facility presents significant complexity, necessitating expenditures in the billions, numerous years, and a wealth of bespoke machinery. While Musk possesses expertise in constructing automotive and aerospace manufacturing plants, his experience does not extend to silicon production.

Presently, it appears that Intel will bear the responsibility for the plant’s construction, despite facing its own challenges. “Our proficiency in designing, manufacturing, and encapsulating exceptionally high-performance semiconductors at scale is poised to expedite Terafab’s objective of generating one terawatt per year of computational power to fuel forthcoming breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and robotics,” the corporation declared in a recent communication on X.

Intel is presently engaged in the construction of two fabrication facilities within Arizona, as a component of a $20 billion capital outlay aimed at expanding its operational presence in the United States. Concurrently, Taiwan’s TSMC is conceptualizing a colossal “Gigafab” to the north of Phoenix, with intentions to operate a dozen state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing complexes.
