A website named PSprices has been monitoring pricing on Sony’s online gaming marketplace and uncovered an anomaly: certain titles were being presented at varying costs to diverse customers. Additionally, these propositions are registered within the PlayStation API, utilizing experimental identifiers like IPT_PILOT and IPT_OPR_TESTING.

Variable pricing is not a novel concept and sees application across numerous sectors. Nevertheless, it frequently encounters strong opposition and is generally not observed in digital game retailers. PSprices reports that Sony is conducting A/B price evaluations for more than 150 games across 68 territories; however, the United States does not presently seem involved in this trial. At this juncture, it seems Sony is not contemplating price increases. Rather, the initiative appears to provide markdowns to specific patrons, spanning from 5 to 17.5 percent, for titles such as Spider-Man 2, God of War, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Nonetheless, even if Sony’s implementation of variable pricing aims to reduce expenditures for certain customers, it will probably incite resentment. Patrons who obtain a 10 percent price reduction on Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will likely not be pleased upon discovering their adjacent resident received a 25 percent markdown.

We contacted Sony seeking a statement, however, a reply has not yet been obtained.
