Samsung’s new app claims to alleviate motion sickness using sound

The application operates with notable simplicity. It emits a low 100Hz sine wave sound through a pair of linked headphones for a duration of 60 seconds. This process is intended to stimulate the vestibular system—the components of the inner ear responsible for spatial awareness and maintaining equilibrium. Users can adjust the tone’s playback time, ranging from 40 to 120 seconds, but a full minute of listening is expected to offer relief from motion sickness symptoms, such as nausea, for up to two hours. The treatment can be repeated whenever necessary.

Samsung states that the app’s concept was inspired by research conducted by Nagoya University in Japan, published last year. This study revealed that specific sound frequencies helped to diminish “the staggering and discomfort experienced by individuals who were requested to peruse a document in a moving vehicle.” However, it is not a guaranteed remedy, and its efficacy may fluctuate based on the type of headphones being utilized. Samsung suggests pairing the application with its Galaxy Buds 4 Pro; nevertheless, while Hearapy is compatible with most headphones or earbuds, they must be capable of reproducing the tone at an 80 to 85-decibel volume level to achieve maximum effectiveness.
