The Netherlands secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Norway in Amsterdam during a spirited international exhibition match, which offered a compelling glimpse of the caliber anticipated at this summer’s World Cup.

The initial period remained somewhat quiet, as both teams were circumspect with the ball. Nevertheless, the contest came alive around the middle of the first half when Andreas Schjelderup delivered a truly exceptional play.

Drifting in from the left flank, he arced a magnificent shot into the distant corner to put Norway ahead. The visitors, even without crucial offensive players, appeared menacing on the counter-attack and almost extended their lead prior to half-time.

The Netherlands nevertheless reacted effectively, securing their leveling goal courtesy of captain Virgil van Dijk. Leaping above the rest from a Teun Koopmeiners corner kick, he forcefully headed the ball past Orjan Nyland to equalize just before the interval.

Oranje joy

Following the break, Ronald Koeman’s side started to impose more dominance. Their relentless pushing paid off in the 51st minute when Tijjani Reijnders slotted home following excellent interplay between Cody Gakpo and Denzel Dumfries.

Norway implemented numerous alterations in the second half, with an emphasis on player rotation, yet still posed occasional threats. Their nearest opportunity for a leveling goal occurred when Jorgen Strand Larsen was thwarted from close quarters by Bart Verbruggen, who made a vital reflex stop.

From that point onward, the Netherlands skillfully controlled the match. Even with late pressure and a rapid succession of substitutions breaking up the flow, they restricted Norway’s obvious scoring opportunities and navigated the final moments.
