Our team at WIRED, including myself, evaluates all earphones, such as those with active noise cancellation, mirroring how you would typically employ them. Over several weeks, we utilize them to assess their wearability, power duration, and the convenience and readiness of their integrated controls. Our listening comprises both spontaneous songs, podcasts, and videos, alongside meticulously assembled playlists featuring music we’ve encountered countless times.
Personally, this entails excerpts from artists like The Beatles, Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac, Beck, Nickel Creek, Snarky Puppy, Frank Sinatra, Depeche Mode, Anderson .Paak, among numerous others. While every one of us possesses a unique compilation, the unifying element remains a diverse range of musical styles to verify their performance across various kinds of audio enthusiasts. When feasible, we allocate time to evaluate uncompressed or superior-quality audio encoding formats using compatible gadgets, with Spotify Lossless serving as my primary audio delivery platform.
To assess active noise cancellation, my associate Parker Hall and I bring the in-ear headphones into real-world environments, evaluating them against noises from mowers, hoovers, building zones, vehicular flow, and other ambient sounds, covering both their pass-through and sound suppression capabilities. As we are both sound engineers, we additionally bring them into our sound-conditioned personal studios, where we pit their noise suppression against aircraft hum simulations, human speech, and broad-spectrum audio emitted via professional speakers.
