Regarding its fidelity to the iPad’s foundational purpose, the iPad Air truly excels. Indeed, the M4 chip within the iPad Air proves somewhat excessive for the typical usage patterns of most individuals. A processor of such potency isn’t strictly necessary for tasks like surfing the internet, conducting video calls via FaceTime, enjoying Apple Arcade games, or engaging in digital artistry with Adobe Illustrator.
Users will experience seamless operation with the M4 iPad Air across all these activities, and substantial reserves remain for more demanding tasks. The 12 GB of integrated RAM, a notable upgrade from the prior generation’s 8 GB, is included by default and offers added certainty against performance limitations. Should you choose to employ the iPad Air as your primary computing tool, be it for academic or professional endeavors, its capability is ample to endure for many years. This is particularly pertinent given the recent enhancements to multitasking and pointer functionality in iPadOS 18, which render it more akin to a Mac than ever before.
Should a discernible disparity exist between the M4 and M3, it unequivocally lies in its graphical processing unit (GPU) capabilities. I had a specific title in mind for testing:Oceanhorn 3, among the most visually demanding Apple Arcade releases recently. In contrast to numerous handheld titles, it provides various predefined graphical configurations for adjustment, which proves beneficial for evaluating its performance boundaries. In the Balanced mode, setting the rendering resolution to 60 percent, the refresh rate appeared fluid and consistent. However, at 80 percent scaling, the refresh rate declined, resulting in a less smooth experience. As a point of comparison, the M4 in the 13-inch MacBook Air exhibits superior performance in certain gaming evaluations, demonstrating, for instance, an advantage of up to 13 percent in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light.
Nevertheless, GPU performance extends beyond mere gaming, as it also accelerates diverse operations, ranging from video composition and three-dimensional design to integrated artificial intelligence computations. Should you be upgrading from an M1 or M2 generation iPad Air, you will perceive the enhancement. However, do users typically employ the iPad Air for such demanding operations? These do not appear to be activities one undertakes spontaneously on a portable tablet device. Yet, you are free to pursue any desired activity with your iPad, and the M4 iPad Air fortuitously enables a considerable range of actions. My estimation, however, is that the majority of users will find it challenging to exploit the full potential of the M4—save for interactive entertainment.
