The compound, supplied in a plastic bag stamped with a clear warning, “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION,” was a white powder that she carefully weighed on a digital scale before encapsulating it for ingestion.

Becks documented her experience in an online diary, noting, “It’s my turn to be a guinea pig.” She chose to share her narrative with The New York Times, requesting anonymity regarding her full name to mitigate potential repercussions on future employment opportunities due to her history of drug use.

This private undertaking places Becks among a growing, albeit dangerous and highly speculative, contingent of individuals adopting a do-it-yourself approach to addiction recovery. Her addiction history encompassed various substances, most recently kratom, an opiate-like botanical known for its pain-relieving and mood-altering properties, which necessitated frequent dosing to mitigate withdrawal symptoms. This substance is one of numerous novel psychoactive substances (NPS) that are synthetically produced, primarily in manufacturing hubs such as China, and distributed globally through online channels. These compounds are typically unregulated, have not undergone rigorous safety or efficacy testing for human use, and are often associated with significant, potentially lethal, health risks. Despite these dangers, their accessibility online makes them attractive to individuals seeking unconventional solutions.

While the majority of NPS are engineered to induce psychoactive effects and are consumed recreationally, SR-17018 presents a unique deviation. It has gained attention within certain communities, particularly online forums like Reddit, for its purported utility in mitigating drug dependence. This perception stems largely from a 2019 study, which suggested that SR-17018 could alleviate drug addiction in laboratory mice.

The dissemination of this animal study’s findings through online platforms, rather than through established medical and scientific channels for human trials, has fueled speculative use among individuals struggling with addiction. This phenomenon highlights a critical intersection of unmet medical needs, the global proliferation of unregulated synthetic drugs, and the rapid, often unchecked, spread of information and anecdotal claims through digital communities.

The decision by individuals like Becks to self-administer such compounds underscores a complex public health challenge.
