A sobering afternoon unfolded for Atletico.
Just three days after their commanding 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, Atletico Madrid endured an abrupt return to reality, suffering a stunning 3-0 defeat at the hands of Rayo Vallecano.
Though Simeone’s squad are well-positioned for the Copa final following their decisive triumph in the initial semi-final encounter, the demands of that prior match seemingly took their toll, as they succumbed to a substantial loss at Vallecas.
Fran Perez, Oscar Valentin, and Nobel Mendy each found the net for Rayo, enabling them to impressively ascend from the relegation zone.
For Atletico, currently in fourth position, the scrutiny promptly commenced, with goalkeeper Jan Oblak delivering a direct assessment during his post-match interview.
“There is no justification; one cannot selectively engage in matches; every game must be contested with the intent to triumph,” Oblak stated. He added, “We entered the field aiming for victory, but our mental state is not conducive to securing consecutive victories; there is no alternative rationale.”
Simeone, however, expressed a different view from Oblak’s analysis.
“I do not concur with Oblak’s remarks,” Simeone declared. He elaborated, “The team does not selectively approach matches; they performed inadequately, and when the adversary demonstrates superior performance, they prove dominant and secure the win.”
“No further explanation is required. The opponent was plainly superior. We endeavored to construct multiple attacks on the right flank where we managed to advance effectively, yet we failed to breach their defense. Conversely, they were effective, applied effective pressure, afforded us no opportunity for deliberation, and executed a strong performance, while we were prevented from enacting our preferred strategy.”
Atletico currently maintain a mere four-point lead over Real Betis, occupying fifth position, in the pursuit of Champions League qualification. Pellegrini’s squad capitalized on the Rojiblancos’ misstep with a 2-1 victory at Mallorca.
The most remarkable goal of the day in Spain, however, was netted by Largie Ramazani, whose spectacular strike concluding a fluid collective play propelled Valencia into the lead during their 2-0 triumph at Levante. This victory extended Valencia’s lead by two points over Mallorca, currently third from the bottom. Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao defeated last-place Real Oviedo 2-1.
Alisson Salvages a Point for Napoli
In Serie A, Alisson Santos secured a draw for Napoli in a highly captivating 2-2 encounter with Roma.
Roma took the lead on two occasions thanks to Donyell Malen; the former Aston Villa player re-established their advantage from a spot-kick after his initial goal had been negated by a redirected long-distance shot from Leonardo Spinazzola.
However, a further turn of events unfolded when Alisson fired powerfully into the bottom-left corner with eight minutes remaining. Reigning titleholders Napoli sit third, trailing leaders Inter by 11 points. Roma, meanwhile, forfeited the opportunity to surpass them in the standings and create distance between themselves and Juventus, currently in fifth. Roma are one point clear of the Bianconeri, holding fourth position.
Other Serie A results: Udinese 1-2 Sassuolo, Cremonese 0-0 Genoa, Parma 2-1 Verona, Torino 1-2 Bologna
Lyon Solidify Their Hold on Third Position
Lyon now find themselves in a prime position to rejoin the Champions League competition, having secured a 2-0 victory against Nice.
Corentin Tolisso and Noah Nartey scored for Les Gones, reinforcing their hold on third position and establishing a five-point lead over Marseille in fourth.
Auxerre enhanced their survival prospects with a 3-1 victory at last-place Metz. Concurrently, Lorient and Le Havre secured victories against Angers and Toulouse, respectively.
In the Bundesliga, Brajan Gruda netted a leveling goal in the 89th minute as aspirant Champions League contenders RB Leipzig recovered from two deficits to secure a 2-2 draw with beleaguered Wolfsburg. Leipzig currently sit fifth, trailing fourth-place Stuttgart by two points. The remaining fixture of the day saw Augsburg defeat last-place Heidenheim, sustaining their recent improvement in performance.
