Get up to speed with all the developments from the South Africa vs India clash in the T20 Cricket World Cup
South Africa established a significant benchmark in the Super 8s phase of the T20 World Cup, securing a 76-run victory against reigning champions India.
In a repeat of the 2024 final held in Barbados, which India narrowly won by seven runs, the Proteas delivered a considerably more convincing performance on this occasion in Ahmedabad.
They rebounded remarkably from a dire start, tallying 187-7 before dismissing India for merely 111 in what proved to be a surprisingly lopsided encounter.
South Africa’s batting innings appeared to be in deep trouble early on. Skipper Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, and Ryan Rickelton each departed for single-digit scores within the powerplay, leaving the team struggling at 20-3 after four overs.
David Miller notched an outstanding 65 off 35 deliveries while Brevis contributed 45 from 29 balls. Brevis missed his half-century by five runs, but Miller pressed on, reaching his fifty in just 26 balls and ensuring South Africa regained command of the match.
After Miller exited with the score at 152-5 in the 16th over, India briefly regained some ground through precise death bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. Nevertheless, Tristan Stubbs ignited a late surge, smashing an unbeaten 44 and accumulating 20 runs from Hardik Pandya’s final over to propel South Africa to a formidable 187-7.

Markram’s squad then carried that momentum onto the field. The captain removed Ishan Kishan for zero in the initial over, and Marco Jansen soon after dismissed Tilak Varma, immediately placing India at a disadvantage. Although Abhishek Sharma avoided a third consecutive duck, he managed only 15 before Jansen struck once more.
India never recovered from their initial collapse. By the midway point of the chase, they stood at 51-5, and the dismissal of captain Suryakumar Yadav effectively terminated their resistance.
Spinner Keshav Maharaj tore through the middle order, claiming three wickets in the 15th over, while Jansen returned to clean up the tail, concluding with exceptional figures of 4-22 as India were bowled out for 111.
Following the game, Markram commended both the bowlers and the crucial partnership that salvaged the innings.
“An excellent showing. We’re thrilled for the bowling unit; they’ve put in diligent work,” he stated. “The collaboration between Miller and Brevis stabilized our position and kept us competitive. We pinpointed areas for aggressive running, and our middle-order batting proved to be the decisive factor.”
India captain Suryakumar Yadav conceded his team had essentially lost the contest during the powerplay. “You cannot secure victory in the powerplay, but you can certainly lose it. We forfeited too many wickets in the powerplay,” he remarked.
