Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic, stands out as perhaps one of the most vocal individuals in global history. He openly challenged two of the planet’s wealthiest and most formidable corporations, nearly reaching the US Supreme Court, while repeatedly disparaging them. He labeled them ‘dishonest,’ ‘deceitful,’ and ‘exceptionally underhanded,’ referred to Android as a ‘pseudo-open platform,’ and characterized both entities as ‘mafia-esque enterprises that will employ any means they deem permissible.’ He also described Google’s Project Hug to me as ‘a remarkably dishonest undertaking of immense scope.’
Effective March 3rd, he not only relinquished Epic’s entitlements to pursue legal action against and denigrate the corporation, but he also forfeited his personal right to champion any additional modifications to Google’s application marketplace guidelines. He is barred from critiquing Google’s digital storefront practices; indeed, he is now obliged to commend them.
The accord specifies that “Epic asserts that the Google and Android platform, given the amendments outlined in this provisional agreement, fosters competition and represents an exemplary standard for digital storefront and platform management, and commits to genuinely promote this view.”
Sweeney might even be compelled to testify in various global judicial forums to uphold this arrangement with Google, and Google is authorized to ensure that his public declarations henceforth endorse the agreement.

As per the executed agreement, it will terminate five years after Google has completed its final adjustments to its platform commissions. Google intends to finalize these by September 30th, 2027, at the latest, meaning Sweeney may be unable to express his true opinions concerning Google’s application marketplace until September 2032.
