The Colorado Avalanche, prior to Friday’s trade deadline, demonstrated their full commitment this season by securing offensive player Nazem Kadri from the Calgary Flames in an eleventh-hour, significant deal.

In exchange for Kadri and a 2027 fourth-round pick, Colorado transferred a contingent 2028 first-round pick, a provisional 2027 second-round pick, offensive player Victor Olofsson, and promising center talent Max Curran to the Flames. Furthermore, Calgary will absorb 20% of Kadri’s $7 million salary cap impact for the final three years of his agreement.

This season, the 35-year-old has tallied 12 goals and accumulated 41 points across 61 games.

Kadri formerly competed for Colorado from 2019-22, clinching a Stanley Cup championship during the 2021-22 season. That summer, the experienced pivot departed as an unrestricted free agent and joined Calgary. Subsequently, he has not participated in the playoffs, as the Flames have gradually declined into their ongoing reconstruction phase.

This rendered Kadri a suitable prospect for exchange. Despite Calgary’s difficulties, he has maintained his effectiveness and resilience, participating in all 82 games in each of the last three seasons and achieving a personal best of 35 goals in the previous year.

The process extended until the concluding moments prior to Friday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline to finalize the deal and facilitate Kadri’s departure. Colorado would have necessitated cap space absorption to enable Kadri to align with the salary cap, a scenario Calgary was attempting to avert if feasible. Ultimately, the Flames received a substantial assortment of assets commensurate with their current forward-looking strategy — and Kadri gains a chance to pursue an additional title in Colorado.

This is precisely what the Avalanche intend to achieve. Colorado sought to strengthen their center depth and initiated this by acquiring Nicolas Roy from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday in exchange for an additional first-round selection. Now, they’ve relinquished a further one — accompanied by various other components — to secure Kadri and possess a legitimate third-line pivot supporting Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson.

The Avalanche are presently leading the entire league, accumulating 91 points.
