INDIAN WELLS, California — Extensive queues had already taken shape outside Stadium 3, a full six hours before Alexandra Eala’s second-round contest against Dayana Yastremska was scheduled to begin at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday.

Brandishing Filipino banners and sporting shirts emblazoned with “Alexandra Eala fan club,” countless fervent admirers seemed intent on making their way inside to observe the 20-year-old marvel. And two more encounters were still slated before Eala stepped onto the court.

Even when postponements pushed the match into the late, cool desert evening, making it the last starting match of the day, numerous devoted fans of Eala remained in the stands, bundled in winter attire and blankets, to encourage her. Following three fiercely contested sets, Eala emerged triumphant, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, just prior to midnight, and the still substantial assembly erupted in applause. A placard stating “Laban Alex!” — meaning “Fight Alex” in Tagalog — was prominently displayed in the foremost row.

This represented merely the latest stop on the burgeoning tennis parallel to the “Eras Tour” — the “Eala Tour,” if one prefers. Eala has rapidly ascended to become one of the sport’s most beloved athletes, attracting throngs of enthusiasts, many new to the sport, to tennis events globally. A surprising semifinal appearance as a wild card at last year’s Miami Open, featuring victories over Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys, catapulted her to prominence, and she has since become an unmissable presence at competitions. Her inaugural match at the Australian Open in January gained widespread attention due to the audience’s overwhelming support for her.

Throughout this journey, she has consistently forged new milestones for her home country, the Philippines — including becoming the highest-ranked Filipina player and the first from the nation to ever reach a WTA final. Currently positioned at No. 32, just one spot below her personal best ranking, she is likely to break into the top 30 following Friday’s triumph. She could advance even further, but first, she must overcome Coco Gauff, the two-time major champion, on Sunday in the Round of 32, featured as the primary night match on Stadium 1.

Eala embraces every aspect of it — the strain, the anticipations, the public scrutiny. While the backing from fans was not a novelty, Friday marked her inaugural appearance at Indian Wells, and it was appreciated more than ever.

“It signifies everything to have this community supporting me at such a renowned tournament,” Eala remarked in the early hours of Saturday morning. “For them to exert the effort to stay up late and brave the cold to cheer me on, it truly intensified the sentiments and emotions after the contest.”

Eala has long harbored grand aspirations. And it didn’t take long for others to recognize her prowess and share in those ambitions.

With sports such as basketball and boxing being among the most popular in the Philippines, and tennis viewed as a more specialized sport lacking significant established global success, Eala relocated at age 13 to Mallorca, Spain, to train at Rafael Nadal’s academy.

The choice proved fruitful. She attained the world No. 2 junior ranking and became the first Filipino to claim a junior major title at the 2022 US Open, addressing the audience in Tagalog in a widely circulated speech. She was just 16 when she graced the cover of Vogue Philippines subsequent to her victory in New York.

She dedicated most of 2023 and 2024 to the ITF circuit, before her astonishing performance in Miami last year altered everything. During that event, Eala confidently defeated a series of former Slam champions — Swiatek, Keys, and Jelena Ostapenko — all in straight sets. Her infectious cheerfulness and emotional, sincere post-match interviews only further endeared her to spectators.

The legend — and the crowds — expanded and *expanded*.

Jessica Pegula had her initial encounter against Eala — and an entire stadium — in the semifinals.

“I competed against her when she first emerged last year in Miami. I originate from there. The entire audience was against me,” Pegula, the world No. 5, stated last month. “I thought, ‘What on earth is happening? Where did these individuals materialize from?’”

Nadal, who retired in 2024, was among the first to extend congratulations to Eala. The two even practiced together during the offseason in November.

Eala, the sole Filipino player currently on either tour, became the first from the nation to enter the top 100 with her display. She reached her inaugural WTA final at Eastbourne just three months later. Subsequently, she became the first player representing the Philippines to secure a Grand Slam match victory in the Open era after a hard-fought win over No. 14 seed Clara Tauson at the US Open. Competing near a district in Queens with a significant Filipino population known as “Little Manila,” Eala credited the dedicated and animated crowd at Grandstand for assisting her throughout the encounter.

“To be Filipino is a source of immense pride for me,” Eala declared. “I lack a home tournament, so to have this community present here at the US Open, I am incredibly thankful they made me feel at home.”

In Dubai last month, Eala suffered a defeat to Gauff, who is typically a crowd favorite wherever she competes, in the quarterfinals — and Gauff acknowledged the overwhelmingly pro-Eala audience after the contest.

“Thank you all for attending,” she said. “I realize you were mostly cheering for Alex, but I must say it’s wonderful to be on a packed court. I’ve participated in this tournament for many years, and witnessing the stadium at full capacity means a great deal.

“Additionally, I’d like to express gratitude to Alex for introducing a new demographic to the sport. I truly appreciate it. I believe it’s fantastic.”

In an interview with The National, tournament director Salah Tahlak attributed an influx of new spectators at the event to Eala.

“Alexandra Eala was a superb enhancement to the player field. She drew a fresh segment of the public to tennis, and the stadium was completely sold out for all her matches. People were desperately attempting to acquire tickets, but none remained.

“We have never witnessed anything quite like it.”

Pegula, the eventual tournament victor, added that she could hear Eala’s supporters in Dubai from her hotel room. “You can hear the audience roaring at night. It’s astonishing,” she commented.

While it is impossible to fully quantify the number of fans who purchase tickets for a tournament specifically to watch a certain player, some figures are indisputable.

Eala’s press briefing preceding the Australian Open garnered 196,000 views — nearly double that of 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic and more than six times the count of eventual men’s winner Carlos Alcaraz. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, a two-time Melbourne champion, registered 9,000 views for her pre-tournament press conference.

A “day in the life” video showcasing Eala, uploaded to the BNP Paribas Open official YouTube channel on Thursday, has already become the tournament’s most-watched content of the 2026 event, by a significant margin.

Eala currently boasts nearly a million followers on Instagram — more than double that of highly-ranked players such as Pegula, Keys, and Amanda Anisimova.

And in November, leveraging the nation’s burgeoning interest in tennis, the WTA announced the establishment of the Philippine Women’s Open, a 125 event, which took place in January. It marked the country’s first WTA tournament. Tickets for the final had already been exhausted before Eala had even verified her participation.

Eala will face a formidable challenge awaiting her on Sunday against Gauff. Their meeting in Dubai last month was their first — though they did play doubles together last year at the Italian Open — and Gauff dominated with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

However, Eala expressed excitement for the return match.

“It was a tough contest for me last time,” Eala stated on Saturday. “I believe she played exceptionally well. So, all I can do is internalize the lessons I gained from our previous match and endeavor to apply them in our next one.”

She added that she anticipated “a large audience to rally behind [Gauff] simply because she’s incredible” and was competing at home. But Eala, who appears to have found a sense of belonging wherever she travels, will, of course, attract her own multitude of supporters, who will strive their utmost to energize her throughout.

After Indian Wells, regardless of when her journey ultimately concludes, Eala will then proceed to Miami, to prepare for the tournament where it all commenced, one year later.
