On Friday, in a preliminary NCAA tournament matchup, third-seeded TCU’s Olivia Miles achieved her twelfth career triple-double as her team defeated UC San Diego with a score of 86-40, marking the Horned Frogs’ forty-third successive home victory.
Miles concluded the game with 12 points, alongside personal bests of 16 rebounds and 14 assists. Taylor Bigby also contributed a personal-best 27 points for the Frogs (now 30-5), a team that saw Clara Silva (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Marta Suarez (11 points, 10 rebounds) each register double-doubles.
Miles distinguished herself as merely the third athlete to achieve multiple triple-doubles in the women’s NCAA tournament, her previous occurrence having been during her tenure at Notre Dame in 2022. The only other players to record multiple triple-doubles in this tournament are Sabrina Ionescu, representing Oregon in 2018 and 2019, and Nicole Powell, who accomplished this for Stanford in successive games in 2002.
Miles’ sixth triple-double of the current season surpassed the previous record held jointly by Brittney Griner and Shalee Lehning for career triple-doubles within Big 12 annals.
She exited the contest immediately following her 3-pointer, which provided a 74-40 advantage with 4:50 remaining. Her tally of 14 assists, furthermore, established a new single-game benchmark for TCU and equaled her personal record.
Erin Condron scored 12 points, pacing UC San Diego (now 24-9), a team that, guided by coach Heidi VanDerveer, has participated in the NCAA tournament during both seasons since achieving complete Division I postseason qualification.
For the second consecutive season, TCU is serving as host for NCAA contests on its home court, having not appeared in the tournament since 2010 prior to this recent streak.
The Frogs maintained a lead throughout the entire game, establishing an 11-2 advantage within the initial 2:02 of play as Suarez sank two 3-pointers and Miles provided the assists for all four field goals during that period. All nine of Suarez’s first-quarter points, incidentally, came from beyond the arc.
Miles recorded a double-double by halftime, accumulating 10 rebounds and 10 assists, in addition to four points, while TCU held a commanding 48-25 lead.
The most recent triple-double in the women’s NCAA tournament was achieved by Caitlin Clark playing for Iowa against Louisville on March 26, 2023, when her stellar performance included 41 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds.
TCU aims to progress to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year as it prepares to host the victor of Friday’s alternative preliminary game in Fort Worth, contested between Washington and South Dakota State.
