FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Let’s review the current events surrounding the New York Jets:

1. A significant cap challenge: The financial landscape of the NFL’s salary cap often generates rather peculiar scenarios. For example: The Jets are disbursing $3.3 million to Geno Smith for his role as their starting quarterback, while Justin Fields receives $8 million to serve as the Kansas City Chiefs’ backup.

This arrangement is far from optimal. Equally problematic is the fact that Fields and Aaron Rodgers, who were their two most recent opening-day starters, are consuming $48 million in cap allocations (approximately 16%) due to “dead” charges.

While the fiscal details may appear unfavorable on paper, it’s crucial to adopt a broader perspective on this situation. These financial constraints have not prevented the Jets from being moderately proactive this offseason — they rank 11th in team expenditures, according to Spotrac. They are also operating with the understanding that clearer financial conditions lie ahead.

We are referring to an excess of $150 million in 2027 cap availability, which will position them as major contenders next offseason. Should a prominent player become accessible via trade, the Jets, equipped with three 2027 first-round draft selections and ample cap resources, will be well-placed to pursue such an acquisition. This applies to any position, including quarterback.

This entire strategy is an integral component of a meticulously devised blueprint by general manager Darren Mougey, who inherited the Rodgers contract alongside several other burdensome agreements (Allen Lazard, for instance?). This partially accounts for the substantial dead-money impact this year — $104 million, ranking as the third-highest in the league, per Spotrac.

A notable portion of that figure is Fields’ cap charge ($20 million), which resulted from Monday’s transaction to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick. Retaining him on the roster would have incurred a cost of $23 million, but such an outcome was improbable following a disastrous 2025 performance.

The Jets ultimately absorbed the majority of Fields’ $10 million guarantee for 2026, a step deemed essential to facilitate the trade. Essentially, Mougey managed to mitigate an unfavorable circumstance, making it marginally less detrimental.

While this might appear to be a squandering of funds, it pales in comparison to the dead charges borne by the Miami Dolphins ($99 million) and Arizona Cardinals ($54 million) for Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray, respectively. In line with an escalating trend, teams are increasingly prepared to absorb substantial contracts.

2. Contingency plan: The Fields trade signifies that the Jets require an experienced backup for Smith. Carson Wentz and Andy Dalton, both previously associated with this vacancy due to their connections with new offensive coordinator Frank Reich, are no longer available. Wentz committed to a new contract with the Minnesota Vikings; Dalton was moved to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The available choices are diminishing. One potential candidate is re-signing Tyrod Taylor. He would complement Smith effectively — they share a positive rapport — but a concern regarding Taylor, at 36, is his susceptibility to injuries. Another prospect is Cooper Rush, 32, who was recently released by the Baltimore Ravens. Other unrestricted free agents include Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson.

A trade can never be discounted — Mougey has executed 12 player exchanges since last year — yet the requested compensation remains elevated.

3. A football wanderer: Fields is among a select group of seven quarterbacks since 1950 to commence a season opener for three distinct franchises in three consecutive seasons. He would be poised to become the inaugural “four-for-four” individual, according to Elias Sports, if Patrick Mahomes has not recovered from his knee ailment by Week 1.

The Chiefs and Jets are slated to compete in Kansas City. Is a retribution game on the horizon?

4. Suitably “Ty-ed”: A vigorously debated draft topic centers on the Ty Simpson conundrum.

Should the Jets, in their quest for a long-term solution at quarterback, select the former Alabama standout with the No. 16 overall pick?

ESPN’s senior draft analyst, Mel Kiper Jr., projects the Jets to acquire Simpson in his most recent mock draft. He cited two justifications: They can gradually acclimate him, allowing him to spend a season learning behind Smith. There is no assurance, even with three first-round selections, that they will secure one of the premier quarterbacks in what is anticipated to be a robust 2027 draft class.

“This notion that next year they’re going to get Arch Manning or Dante Moore. Who knows if they will or they won’t?” Kiper articulated during a national conference call.

Kiper advanced the notion of the Jets emulating the New York Giants’ strategy last year with Jaxson Dart: executing a trade up into the latter part of the first round. The Jets, holding the 33rd pick, could readily execute such a maneuver. The pertinent question is whether Simpson, possessing only 15 collegiate starts, warrants that level of commitment.

Recent historical data suggests otherwise.

Since 2011, six out of the seven first-round quarterbacks with fewer than 17 college starts did not achieve sustained success in the NFL: Jake Locker (12), Christian Ponder (12), Anthony Richardson Sr. (13), Mitchell Trubisky (13), Blaine Gabbert (13), and Dwayne Haskins (14). The solitary exception was Cam Newton (14), who was named NFL MVP in 2015.

It would appear contradictory for Mougey, who adheres to a long-range strategic plan, to choose a quarterback with limited experience in a comparatively weak quarterback class.

Why Louis Riddick rates Ty Simpson so highly

Louis Riddick expresses strong commendation for why he believes Ty Simpson has merited a position as a top-15 selection in the 2026 NFL draft.

5. Free agent summary: A rather active offseason thus far. The most recent tally of signings includes eight external free agents (amounting to $70 million in guaranteed funds) and seven of their own free agents ($7 million). Eight of their former free agents have joined other organizations ($60 million), and they still have nine unsigned free agents, mostly

notably Taylor.

6. Financial Records: Wide receiver Garrett Wilson has progressive assurances incorporated into the four-year, $130 million extension he inked last July, and his 2027 remuneration ($24.5 million) became completely assured earlier this week. Previously, it offered protection solely in case of injury.

7. Indestructible Player: Middle linebacker Demario Davis, 37, stands as an absolute marvel. He performs in one of the most physically exacting positions in the sport, yet he has been absent for merely a single match due to physical ailment in 14 years — 2024, kept out by a strained hamstring.

He did miss one game in 2021 due to COVID-19, but the man has recorded over 1,000 defensive snaps during every one of the past six seasons.

“I think I have an exceptional crew that’s attending to me continuously throughout the year,” stated Davis, who inked a two-year, $22 million contract after becoming an unrestricted player. “It’s akin to an automobile. Once it deviates from the course, it perpetually finds itself in the workshop, undergoing maintenance.”

8. Playmaker: Nahshon Wright presents an intriguing narrative. Dealt by the Dallas Cowboys, released two times by the Vikings, the cornerback joined the Chicago Bears in 2025 and achieved a Pro Bowl-caliber performance under a minimum-salary contract. Indeed, he emerged as merely the fourth athlete in the last 10 years with five interceptions and a minimum of two forced turnovers and two recovered fumbles in a season.

Such achievements followed a period where he recorded only one interception and no forced fumbles or recoveries across his initial four campaigns altogether.

A slow starter or a fleeting sensation?

The market for unattached players seemingly considered him the latter. The Jets acquired him at a steal (one year, $3.5 million) — a signing with minimal hazard. Undeniably, it satisfies a deficiency; Wright recorded five additional picks compared to the whole Jets squad last season.

In recognition of his performance, he was awarded an unparalleled $1.4 million in incentive compensation — an incentive scheme created to compensate less remunerated athletes.

9. Selection choices latest: Mougey has engaged in such extensive trading and negotiation that it’s challenging to monitor the Jets’ draft picks. Their present 2026 selection allocation is as follows: Round 1 (2 and 16 overall); Round 2 (33 and 44); Round 4 (103 and 140); Round 5 (179) and Round 7 (228 and 242).

Should you be curious, their third-round selection was transferred to the Eagles in the notorious Haason Reddick transaction in 2024.

10. Distinguished Recognition: Erstwhile veteran special units organizer Mike Westhoff is to be honored June 24-25 in Canton, Ohio, at which he is slated to obtain an accolade of distinction from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The “Excellence” awards, established in 2022, acknowledge pivotal figures to the game.

Westhoff informed ESPN that he “could not be more delighted or more honored” regarding the commendation. Numerous past players of his will be present at the celebrations. One of them, Westhoff said, began to weep during their phone conversation upon his imparting of the information. Westhoff, 78, revered by his athletes, was a pioneering mentor who dedicated the majority of his professional life with the Jets and Dolphins.
