The chief of Counter Terrorism Policing London’s Explosives Disposal Unit has recounted aspects of his professional journey managing explosive threats in a fresh podcast installment, providing a glimpse into both armed forces and homeland operations, Counter Terrorism Policing stated.

This installment, forming a segment of the Inside Counter Terrorism Policing series, showcases “Tom”, an ex-British Army explosives expert who concluded a two-decade-plus military tenure before transitioning into law enforcement. His active duty encompassed postings in Northern Ireland and Afghanistan, succeeded by participation in addressing occurrences like the Parsons Green and Fishmongers’ Hall attacks.

Within the podcast, Tom details the true nature of bomb disposal in active duty settings, encompassing situations not addressed by official instruction. “Our instruction never, under any circumstances, addressed an incendiary device,” he stated, underscoring the erratic nature of improvised explosive devices.

Pondering his past work, he described bomb disposal as “standard practice” yet conceded the intrinsic perils present, observing the potentially fatal consequences linked to every explosive. This installment further examines the psychological pressures connected to the position and encounters with high-risk incidents.

The podcast series endeavors to offer a glimpse into the operations of Counter Terrorism Policing, presenting direct narratives from personnel spanning diverse roles. Forthcoming installments will delve into subjects such as digital information gathering, criminal supervision, and homeland safety measures.

A fresh installment will be accessible on Acast, Spotify and Apple each Thursday. These are:

  • Clara (currently available):  Transitioning from crisis mediator to perilous settings
  • Tom (currently accessible): from disarming explosives in conflict zones to safeguarding the thoroughfares of London
  • Jenna (available March 26): the experience of collaborating with convicted extremists within society
  • Grace (accessible April 2): Preventing assaults via digital information gathering
  • Alex (releasing April 9): transitioning from urban legal professional to national security events

These can be located and heard, along with the installments from the initial series, at any platform where you acquire your podcasts https://shows.acast.com/inside-counter-terrorism-policing/episodes
