Los Angeles County’s electorate approved an investigation concerning the prospective consolidation between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, along with its repercussions for the media sector.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors endorsed the resolution for the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) to undertake an “exhaustive assessment of financial consequences” regarding the immediate and secondary effects the amalgamation might have on the county’s job market.

Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath declared in a press release: “Media content transcends mere viewing on a display; it embodies a facet of our identity as Angelenos and serves as a fundamental pillar of our financial system. Countless households depend upon this sector for their sustenance, hence the imperative to safeguard their occupations and our defining industry.”

She proceeded, stating: “As this impending consolidation progresses, a precise comprehension of its ramifications on employment opportunities, market rivalry, and the evolution of narrative creation is imperative. Today, we acted decisively to back employees, bolster our regional financial system, and maintain Los Angeles as the hub of the worldwide media sector.”

Per Horvath, the initiator of the proposal, the DEO is slated to “formulate employment tactics, encompassing vocational education and employment assistance schemes, to assist and preserve media sector personnel.” The department will provide an update to the Los Angeles board within 60 days, with a conclusive document required in 120 days.

The legal advisor for Los Angeles County will subsequently forward a conclusive document to the Department of Justice concerning prospective monopolistic concerns.

Fonda stated, “Los Angeles thrives on the ingenuity and diligence of the individuals driving our media domain. As this takeover proceeds, we must ensure that employees and narrative creators are not disregarded. I am thankful to Supervisor Lindsey Horvath for championing our industry and for the people who fuel it daily.”

Opponents of the offer have voiced worries that the merging of two established production houses beneath a single corporate entity might result in extensive job cuts within the media sector.
