Wales’s aspirations to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed, as their journey concluded with a semi-final elimination in the play-offs against Bosnia and Herzegovina, following a penalty shootout at the Cardiff City Stadium. This outcome came after Brennan Johnson struck his shot wide of the goal and Neco Williams’s penalty was denied by Nikola Vasilj.
Commemorating two years since their home loss to Poland in a penalty shootout for Euro 2024 qualification, Wales initially rattled the frame of the goal with a curving first-half attempt from Harry Wilson. Subsequently, Daniel James propelled them into the lead with a magnificent long-range shot just six minutes after the interval.

After falling behind, Bosnia and Herzegovina significantly heightened their offensive pressure. The home side’s goalkeeper, Karl Darlow, executed a superb save, parrying away an Edin Dzeko header. Yet, the ex-Manchester City forward ultimately sparked his team’s resurgence, nodding in Kerim Alajbegovic’s corner four minutes before the end of regular time.
During the penalty shootout, Darlow denied Ermedin Demirovic’s opening attempt. Wales successfully converted their initial two penalties through Harry Wilson and Mark Harris. However, Haris Tabakovic, Ivan Basic, and Amir Hadziahmetovic each scored for Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Kerim Alajbegovic ultimately clinching the victory.
Bosnia and Herzegovina are scheduled to host Italy in a single-elimination game on Tuesday (19:45 GMT) to secure a place in the final. Italy had previously defeated Northern Ireland 2-0 on home turf in their semi-final encounter.

Assessment: Ampadu’s Perspective on Wales’s Loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Ethan Ampadu of Wales remarked that his team’s pre-shootout huddle, though it “appeared quite modest,” nevertheless “demonstrated a solidarity that renders us exceptionally powerful.”
The Leeds United versatile player informed BBC Sport, stating, “We’ll perpetually remain united. As professionals, and given the high expectations within this squad, we will invariably reflect upon what we might have improved.”

He continued, “Perhaps we could have controlled the match more effectively in the ten minutes prior to their goal, ensuring we maintained an aggressive, offensive posture.”
“That encapsulates our preferred style of play,” he added, “and occasionally, when adversaries advance players, one inevitably becomes pushed deeper. I am confident that is an aspect we can address going forward.”
Wales vs Bosnia and Herzegovina: James’s Incredible Goal Explained
Leeds winger James appeared poised for vindication by virtue of his extraordinary strike, especially after failing to convert a spot-kick in the previous encounter with Poland.
Nia Jones, an ex-Wales women’s international, described James’s initial goal as “cracking.” Jones then exclaimed, “My word!”

“What a strike!” she continued. “It’s been two years since he missed that crucial penalty against Poland, which denied Wales the opportunity to progress to a major tournament.”
“It’s such a fabulous shot,” she elaborated. “He strikes it flawlessly. This is because he releases it sooner than Vasilj anticipated, causing the goalkeeper to lose his footing.”
“[James] has not featured from the outset in a Premier League match for Leeds since November. This illustrates why one should not question any squad choices made by head coach Craig Bellamy; he thoroughly understands his players and is acutely aware of their capabilities.”
