Heimir Hallgrimsson, the Republic of Ireland’s manager, stated that his squad experienced “profound anguish” after their endeavor to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was halted by an away loss to Czechia, in what he termed “an unsatisfactory football game”.

During a penalty shootout, Matej Kovar thwarted attempts by Finn Azaz and Alan Browne, enabling the home team – which had previously rallied from a two-goal deficit to achieve a 2-2 draw following extra time at the Fortuna Arena – to progress to a single-match play-off final against Denmark on foreign ground.

“It’s nearly unattainable,” remarked Heimir Hallgrimsson, appointed in July 2024, when discussing with RTE Sport the sentiments he conveyed to Azaz and Browne.

“One attempts to speak with them, to uplift their spirits. Yet, it is merely sorrow. We are all overwhelmed by grief at this moment. Healing requires patience.”

Review: Czechia vs Ireland ‘Lacked Command’

Ireland gained a 2-0 lead within 23 minutes, thanks to Troy Parrott’s penalty in the 19th minute and an own goal by Kovar. However, Patrik Schick scored a penalty in the 27th minute after Ryan Manning was deemed to have committed a foul on Ladislav Krejci. Later, following Jayson Molumby’s shot hitting a post for the visiting side in the second half, Krejci delivered the leveling header just four minutes before the end.

“The match was filled with intense feelings,” Hallgrimsson mused. “Neither squad managed to assert dominance.”

“The contest was consistently chaotic, for both our side and theirs. It consisted of aerial passes, wide deliveries, dead-ball situations, and skirmishes. The outcome of the game hinged on these particular junctures.”

“Our discussions focused on striving to command the play, to engage in more ground passing. I believed we were establishing authority when that particular penalty occurred.”

“Our morale was high, and it invariably impacts one’s mindset when a goal is allowed so rapidly afterward. Reaching this stage means success often relies on mere fortune or a chance happening.”

The ‘Enchanting’ Nature of Ireland’s Supporters

Hallgrimsson and Parrott commended the supporters who journeyed to the game. “The individuals who back us are simply incredible,” remarked the Icelander.

“To experience the affection at the match’s conclusion, despite our defeat, was, from my foreign perspective, truly enchanting.”

“I simply wish to express my gratitude to everyone who made the trip here and stood by us, not just presently but across the entire campaign. I must remember this, as witnessing it was profoundly significant for me.”

“The team we competed against today… [is] exceptionally strong when playing on home turf, ranking above us in the FIFA standings, and we were the away side.”

“We can take pride in our current squad members, and our task is simply to keep developing.”

Parrott urged Ireland’s devotees to “remain loyal to us.” “Throughout the week, we sensed their backing,” commented the prolific AZ forward.

“We understood the immense significance of this to all. I’m utterly devastated that we were unable to achieve it for everyone who stood by us.”

“In moments such as these, I feel immense satisfaction regarding my origins. We simply affirmed in the locker room that now is the period to unite as a collective, given the presence of truly skilled players among us.”

“It genuinely requires immense courage to approach the spot and attempt a [penalty], thus, no criticism will come from me or my fellow players.”

Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott

“My esteem for them grew even further for volunteering in that circumstance and converting a penalty. They weren’t obliged to – they could have declined, they could have expressed an unwillingness to do so.”

“I take pride in the squad I belong to, and I am equally proud of every Irish individual who gave us their support.”

In the shootout, Parrott, Krejci, Adam Idah, Tomas Soucek, and Robbie Brady each successfully scored. Subsequently, Brentford’s goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, made a save against Mojmir Chytil, granting Ireland a temporary lead. However, Kovar’s subsequent saves, combined with successful efforts from Schick and Jan Kliment, ultimately propelled Czechia into the next stage.
