Taxi operators ought to be safeguarded through the mandating of a “floor price” for autonomous taxis provided by Waymo and Tesla, a measure intended to avert “aggressive price undercutting,” asserts the chief executive of Addison Lee.

During a discussion, Liam Griffin cautioned that current private car service providers might be “driven out of business by pricing” should well-resourced tech conglomerates be permitted to deploy autonomous taxis at rates considerably below current charges.

“We perceive a genuine risk that dominant entities could enter and disregard the established sector,” expressed the head of the British private car hire and delivery firm.

“It’s unacceptable for this advanced, appealing technology to be introduced and abruptly overlook the drivers upon whom we have depended for an extended period,” he continued.

The city of London is poised to transform into a contested arena among the globe’s foremost autonomous vehicle enterprises, as Waymo, an Alphabet (Google’s parent company) offshoot, and China’s Baidu intend to introduce autonomous taxi services before the year’s end.

Addison Lee experienced a significant impact from the advent of Uber and similar ride-sharing platforms in the capital over a decade past, and came under the ownership of ComfortDelGro, a Singapore-listed transport group, in 2024.

“People’s means of subsistence are at stake,” Griffin articulated. “Consequently, I am of the opinion that the regulatory body must initially restrict the issuance of these licenses and carefully monitor the pricing. Should it be necessary to establish a floor price for this, then I believe it ought to do so.”

The fares for London’s iconic black taxis are strictly controlled, featuring a base trip cost of £4.20.

Within London, enterprises aiming to test autonomous driving systems are obligated to consult with the mayor, local councils, and Transport for London. An additional permit is necessary to run a paid passenger transport operation.

Although autonomous taxis provided by Waymo in American urban centers currently exceed the cost of conventional taxi and ride-sharing options, market observers anticipate a reduction in these costs with greater operational volume. In China, firms are already providing substantial price reductions to incentivize patrons to experience the innovation, and HSBC predicts that autonomous taxis will eventually present savings of up to 20 percent relative to services driven by humans over time.

“Entities possessing the most substantial financial resources are positioned to succeed . . . and it is imperative that the regulatory body ensures that a limited number of participants do not enter the fray . . . rendering it impossible for established operators like us to compete,” Griffin commented.

ComfortDelGro ranks among the globe’s foremost managers of taxi and private chauffeured car fleets, commanding a fleet exceeding 43,000 vehicles across Singapore, China, the UK, and Australia. Griffin stated that, given its extensive operations, Addison Lee was “ideally positioned” to assume a significant part in the self-driving vehicle sector and was enhancing its proficiencies with autonomous taxis in China and self-operating buses in Singapore.

He put forward the idea that Addison Lee might collaborate with “multiple autonomous vehicle firms,” and further remarked: “Just as we presently operate Volkswagens, Mercedes, and Audis within our vehicle pool, I envision a future where we incorporate Pony.ai, Waymo, and Wayve.”

Nevertheless, he warned that Europe remained with “considerable efforts ahead” prior to being able to match the progress of the US and China, where businesses were already deploying extensive collections of autonomous taxis. Furthermore, Tesla initiated an autonomous taxi service in Austin, Texas, in the previous year and forecasted its adoption would be “extensive” across the US by the close of the current year.
