A collaboration, potentially valued at $1.25 billion, was revealed by Rivian and Uber on Thursday. This alliance aims to expedite both firms’ aspirations for self-driving vehicles and implement as many as 50,000 completely self-governing robotaxis in the forthcoming years.
As per the accord, Uber is set to commit a maximum of $1.25 billion into Rivian until 2031, contingent upon the attainment of specific operational benchmarks for autonomous capabilities by designated timelines.
A preliminary $300 million capital injection has been agreed upon by the two corporations, subsequent to the pact’s formalization and pending authorization from governing bodies.
Uber intends to acquire 10,000 completely self-operating Rivian R2 robotaxis, either firsthand or via its vehicle network associates. Furthermore, this transportation network company will possess the prerogative to acquire as many as 40,000 additional units in 2030. Rivian’s self-operating fleet of R2 robotaxis will be accessible solely via the Uber platform.

The corporations intend to commence the preliminary rollout of these robotaxis in San Francisco and Miami by 2028, prior to extending operations into over twenty-four urban centers by 2031.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s chief executive, remarked that the corporation is “staunch advocates of Rivian’s methodology – conceiving the vehicle, processing system, and program architectures concurrently while upholding complete oversight of extensive manufacturing and provisioning within the U.S.”
“That consolidated operational structure, coupled with insights gleaned from their expanding user car demographic and expertise in handling the intricacies of business vehicle collectives, instills in us confidence to establish these bold yet attainable objectives,” Khosrowshahi appended.
