Trump’s Own Justices ‘Sicken’ Him After Tariff Ruling

Trump says Gorsuch and Barrett 'sicken' him after Supreme Court tariff ruling

Former President Donald Trump comments on the Supreme Court’s verdict invalidating extensive trade levies.

Donald Trump, the former president, harshly criticized two Supreme Court justices he had nominated, deeming them “detrimental to our nation,” after they sided with the majority in a judgment that undermined his trade levy strategy.

This condemnation follows a Supreme Court ruling last month that prevented his invocation of an emergency statute to impose broad tariffs.

By a 6–3 tally, the prevailing opinion determined that the law referenced to legitimize the import duties “does not empower the President to enact tariffs.”

Addressing a National Republican Congressional Committee dinner in Washington, D.C., Trump conveyed his vexation with Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, though he did not identify them by name.

“Flawed courts in this country are costing us an immense fortune,” Trump asserted. “The Supreme Court, indeed, of the United States, deprived our country — with just a single sentence — of hundreds of billions of dollars, and they exhibited utter indifference. They couldn’t care less.”

Without identifying individuals, Trump then targeted Gorsuch and Barrett, his own nominees, declaring they “disgust” him.

“Two of the individuals who supported that decision, whom I nominated, disgust me,” Trump stated. “They revolt me because they’re detrimental to our nation.”

Trump has in the past aimed criticism at the court, particularly the six members who ruled unfavorably towards him.

The president expressed he was “disgraced by specific justices of the court, utterly mortified, for their lack of fortitude in upholding what is just for the nation.”

At a gathering organized recently by Rice University, Chief Justice John Roberts — who authored the court’s judgment — cautioned against individual attacks on national judiciary members, pointing to a surge in “perilous” and aggressive language.

Roberts emphasized the distinction between evaluating a judicial directive or statutory interpretation and individually assailing the jurist responsible for it.

“It is vital that our judgments undergo examination, and indeed they do,” Roberts affirmed.

“The issue is that occasionally, commentary can transition from an emphasis on juridical assessment to individuals. And one observes broadly, not merely from a singular ideological viewpoint, that it becomes more individually aimed. And that, honestly, can indeed be truly hazardous.”

The dispute revolved around whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) conferred upon the president the power to enact these tariffs, or if such an action overstepped constitutional boundaries.

This controversy originated with Trump’s “Freedom Day” duties last April, an extensive set of measures intended to rectify commercial disparities and lessen dependence on foreign merchandise.

Following the policy’s implementation, income from tariffs has dramatically increased.

Levies soared from $9.6 billion in March to $23.9 billion in May. By fiscal 2025, total accumulations amounted to $215.2 billion, based on financial department figures, with revenues persistently rising into fiscal 2026.

Subsequent to the decision, Trump unveiled a 10% worldwide levy under Section 122, which is “in addition to our standard duties currently imposed.”
