The U.S. Air Force’s primary training command has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into all aspects of Airmen education and development, aiming to create a force of “Digital Airmen.” The directive, signed on August 17 by Lt. Gen. Clark J. Quinn, head of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), outlines a blueprint for embedding AI across the service’s entire training and education enterprise, from initial pilot instruction to specialized technical courses.
A central objective of this initiative is to reduce the average time required for training by up to 20 percent in specific technical specialties. This will be achieved through competency-based, adaptive learning methodologies and the strategic application of AI. Daniel Hawkins, an AETC spokesman, clarified that this approach will tailor learning to individual Airmen’s paces. “Traditional training often adheres to fixed time schedules regardless of individual learner grasp,” Hawkins stated in an email. To fund these modernization efforts, AETC has adopted an “offset-to-modernize” strategy. This approach aims for a 25 percent reduction in legacy software sustainment and overhead costs by “shutting down redundant, slow, and outdated IT systems,” according to the release. An IT Investment Review Board has been established by AETC to audit “localized, redundant, and sustainment-intensive legacy software systems across all training wings,” Hawkins explained. He specified that “The primary divestment targets are duplicative, on-premises databases and customized legacy applications whose capabilities can be absorbed by modern, enterprise-wide Software-as-a-Service and cloud-native solutions.”
Over the next six to 12 months, the command has outlined several critical next steps:
- Building Enterprise Data Foundations:Establishing a common data layer on the Envision platform, integrating AETC data sources, and ensuring tier-one mission data meets “AI-Ready” quality standards.
