A Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle producer has formally inaugurated its inaugural manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom, marking an amplification of industrial collaboration in the defence sector between London and Kyiv.
Ukrspecsystems, widely recognized as Ukraine’s foremost producer of drones, commenced operations at its facility in Mildenhall, Suffolk, on the 25th of February. Its official inauguration saw Luke Pollard MP, the Minister overseeing Defence Preparedness and Industry, attend with General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who serves as Ukraine’s envoy to the UK.
The firm declared this launch constitutes a significant landmark in its substantial £200 million capital outlay within the UK and its pledge to generate numerous proficient employment opportunities throughout the East of England region. Among those present were Ukrainian military personnel undergoing training in the UK, delegates from the British Armed Forces and the Defence Ministry, as well as prominent figures from local commerce and academia.
Rory Chamberlain, Ukrspecsystems’ Managing Director for the UK, expressed that this undertaking would bolster the robustness of both provision and manufacturing processes.
“A quadrennium following Russia’s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine, this facility provides crucial elements: dependable provision, safeguarded assets, and ongoing backing for Ukraine. Through setting up manufacturing operations in the UK, Ukrspecsystems enhances the fortitude of the UK’s defence industrial framework, simultaneously offering a reliable logistics network guaranteeing that the unmanned aerial vehicles vital to the Ukrainian military can be fabricated and expanded unimpeded.”
He further noted: “Achieved with the endorsement of both the UK and Ukrainian Governments and in collaboration with British small and medium-sized enterprises, this exemplifies ‘Made with Ukraine’ in practice – manifesting the UK-Ukraine Century Partnership via tangible industrial prowess, presently unfolding in East Anglia.”
Pollard characterized this capital injection as an indicator of trust in the United Kingdom.
“Our determination to assist Ukraine remains more robust than before, and we are championing Ukraine’s resolute military as they strive for tranquility.”
He proceeded: “The newly established Ukrspecsystems plant signifies an affirmation of faith in British aid and accentuates the growing collaboration among the defence sectors of our countries. This capital outlay is projected to generate as many as 500 novel employment opportunities within the East of England, propel the defence industry as a catalyst for economic expansion, and assist Ukraine in safeguarding itself from Putin’s belligerence.”
General Zaluzhnyi presented the undertaking as an element of a more expansive security affiliation.
“This facility symbolizes more than mere industrial collaboration; it forms a component of an emergent European security structure founded on mutual accountability and joint manufacturing efforts. Ukraine contributes expertise garnered from the battlefield and pioneering advancements, and in concert with the United Kingdom, we are fortifying the capacities requisite to dissuade hostile actions.”
The corporation stated that the unmanned aerial vehicles slated for fabrication at Mildenhall would encompass the PD-2, Shark, and Mini-Shark models. Furthermore, a division focused on parts and auxiliary operations, alongside aspects of investigation and advancement, will also be conducted at this location.
Manufacturing activities at Mildenhall, coupled with a facility for trials and instruction situated at Elmsett, are anticipated to generate as many as 500 employment opportunities, both directly and throughout the broader supply network. These positions will span technical, logistical, and administrative domains, supplemented by a vocational training scheme.
The inauguration aligns with the quadrennial mark of Russia’s comprehensive incursion into Ukraine.
