A shooting incident at a busy In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left seven others wounded. Authorities identified the lone gunman as Chad Williams, 24, who reportedly acted independently during the afternoon rampage. The incident, which occurred amidst a typical Saturday afternoon of shopping and dining, sent customers seeking cover both inside the establishment and behind vehicles in the parking lot.

Officials stated on Sunday that the casualty count could have been significantly higher were it not for the “heroic action” of an off-duty state trooper and a private citizen. These individuals reportedly returned fire, engaging the assailant and disrupting his actions.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks acknowledged their intervention during a news conference on Sunday, asserting, “We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties.” Chief Hicks confirmed that Chad Williams died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

As of Sunday, Chief Hicks declined to publicly identify the deceased and injured victims, citing the ongoing process of notifying next of kin. Of the seven individuals who sustained injuries, two remained in critical condition, three were reported stable, and two others received treatment at a local hospital before being released. The police chief emphasized that these figures were considered preliminary as the investigation continued.

Further complicating the incident, Chief Hicks also confirmed a second officer-involved shooting that transpired minutes after law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene and initiated a search for the gunman. No one was injured in this secondary engagement, and the officer’s actions are currently under review by the Jerome Police Department. The primary shooting incident is being jointly investigated by the Twin Falls Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.).

“We are still working to determine the full set of circumstances in this incident, including the suspect’s actions and possible motivations,” Chief Hicks stated, adding that the Williams family has been notified of the events and is cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities. Investigators are meticulously working to reconstruct a detailed timeline of the shooting and are conducting interviews with hundreds of individuals who were present in and around the shopping center at the time of the incident.

Police dispatchers began receiving multiple emergency calls at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, reporting gunshots from inside the restaurant. Callers described a chaotic scene, with screams audible in the background, indicative of the terror that disrupted the routine weekend activities. While official identification of the victims remains pending, some details have begun to emerge through social media posts and family statements.

Among those killed was an employee of the In-N-Out Burger restaurant. Lyndi Snyder, president of In-N-Out Burger, issued a statement via social media mourning the loss: “We lost one of our beautiful Associates tonight. She was taking care of our most important asset — our Customers, and her life was taken by a disgusting human who doesn’t value the lives of others or his own.” Ms. Snyder did not disclose the employee’s name.

An eyewitness, 34-year-old construction worker Lane Koehn, described the scene in the parking lot where a group had gathered around an injured female employee. According to Mr. Koehn, a man identifying himself as a retired paramedic applied pressure to her chest wound until emergency medical services arrived. Mr. Koehn characterized the gunman’s actions during the event, stating, “I think it was random, the way the kid was firing. You can tell he was panicking. He was not very calm and collected, running and slinging his rifle around firing.”

Another victim identified through family and co-worker social media posts was Terry Dudley, a 62-year-old taxi driver in Twin Falls. Mr. Dudley was reportedly shot while charging his Tesla vehicle. James Palmer, the organizer of a GoFundMe campaign established to support Mr. Dudley and other victims, described him as a widower and father of four, emphasizing that his children were “his world.”

Mr. Palmer’s tribute highlighted Mr. Dudley’s character: “There are very few people in this world like Terry. He is the kind of man who quietly puts others before himself, who works hard, loves deeply, and never hesitates to lend a helping hand. He is tenacious, compassionate, kind hearted, and has a way of making those around him smile, even on their hardest days.” Mr. Palmer further praised Mr. Dudley as “the best employee” he had ever had, describing him as “loyal, dependable, selfless, and the kind of person every community is better for having.”

Christopher Claunch, who worked at the Renaissance Ranch Recovery Center in Rupert, Idaho, was also confirmed to have died from his injuries. His sister, Kimberly Castaneda of Rosamond, California, shared details of his life. A California native, Mr. Claunch had resided in Idaho for approximately 30 years. Ms. Castaneda recounted his fondness for In-N-Out, noting he would always visit the chain when returning to the Pacific Coast. She expressed surprise at his presence at the new Twin Falls location, as he had previously indicated he would wait for the initial excitement to subside due to anticipated long waits.

Mr. Claunch had achieved sobriety two years prior to the incident, following a prolonged struggle with alcoholism throughout much of his adult life. His sister indicated that he carried a lasting pain from the loss of his first wife in a car crash just three months into their marriage. She fondly recalled celebrating the Fourth of July with him in June in his hometown of Hagerman, describing him as a “goofball” who would playfully wear her accessories.

Maia Spoto contributed to the reporting of this incident.

Why This Matters

The mass shooting at the In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, underscores the pervasive and unpredictable nature of gun violence in public spaces across the United States. This incident, occurring in a seemingly ordinary fast-food restaurant on a Saturday afternoon, highlights how quickly routine daily activities can be shattered by acts of violence, affecting individuals from all walks of life. It compels communities to confront difficult questions regarding public safety, the prevalence of firearms, and the factors contributing to such tragic events.

The immediate and decisive actions of an off-duty state trooper and a private citizen who intervened highlight the complex role of armed individuals in active shooter scenarios, potentially mitigating further casualties but also raising questions about the broader societal reliance on such interventions. The incident inevitably fuels ongoing national debates about gun control measures, mental health support, and strategies for prevention, particularly in states with relatively permissive gun laws.

Furthermore, the tragic loss of life and the severe injuries sustained leave a profound and lasting impact on the victims, their families, and the wider Twin Falls community. As investigators work to piece together the motive and full circumstances, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ripple effects of violence, from individual trauma to collective grief and the renewed demand for solutions to protect everyday citizens in everyday places. It also brings into focus the challenges faced by law enforcement in responding to and investigating such complex, rapidly unfolding events.
