ÇORLU, Turkey – European aerospace and defense giant Leonardo, in partnership with Turkish uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturer Baykar, has successfully completed the inaugural phase of live flight testing for their K-SWARM program. This significant milestone involved Italian M-346 jet aircraft flying in joint autonomous formations with Baykar’s advanced Bayraktar KIZILELMA uncrewed fighter, demonstrating critical advancements in crewed-uncrewed teaming (C-UT) technologies.

The trials, conducted throughout May at one of Baykar’s extensive flight and test centers in Çorlu, Turkey, marked a crucial transition for the K-SWARM initiative. Previously confined to simulations, the program has now moved into real-world operational environments, focusing on the design and development of seamless interoperability between manned and unmanned aircraft. This concept of C-UT stands at the forefront of contemporary military aviation strategy, shaping the future of combat air operations globally.

The flight campaign integrated two Leonardo M-346 airframes: a company-owned Fighter Attack variant and an Italian Air Force T-346A, which served as a chase aircraft. These crewed platforms were paired with the KIZILELMA uncrewed fighter, specifically designed for combat roles. The core objective was to assess and validate next-generation algorithms essential for collaborative and coordinated operations between disparate aerial platforms.

According to statements released by both companies, the missions showcased remarkable autonomous capabilities. Following an autonomous taxi and take-off sequence, the KIZILELMA utilized “Smart Fleet Autonomy” algorithms – developed within Baykar’s sophisticated Hardware-in-the-Loop Laboratory – to autonomously rejoin the M-346. Once the uncrewed aircraft achieved its formation position, the crew of the M-346 assumed full command and control, effectively becoming the mission lead.

Pilots in the M-346, utilizing a newly developed onboard avionic suite, then directed the KIZILELMA through a series of complex formation maneuvers. The uncrewed fighter executed precise position changes, tactical separations, and rejoining procedures in direct response to commands from the manned aircraft. Maintaining this intricate coordination was an advanced radio frequency data exchange system, ensuring constant synchronization between the platforms. Crucially, this communication was safeguarded by Leonardo’s proprietary GCC Tactical Platform, a robust cyber defense system designed for real-time monitoring and secure command and control of the flight formations.

Both Leonardo and Baykar characterized this work as a major milestone in the evolution of crewed-uncrewed teaming. The concept is widely recognized across NATO and allied air forces as one of the central enablers for future combat air systems. It envisions pairing manned fighters with one or more uncrewed wingmen, often referred to as “loyal wingmen,” capable of carrying diverse payloads such as advanced sensors, weapons systems, or electronic warfare equipment. The crewed aircraft maintains oversight, acting as the tactical and strategic mission commander for the entire formation.

Variants of this strategic concept are pivotal to several high-profile international defense initiatives. These include the United States Air Force’s ambitious Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, the United Kingdom’s efforts under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) to develop adjuncts for its future Tempest fighter, and the joint Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS) endeavor. Beyond these principal Western blocs, a growing number of national programs are also exploring and investing in C-UT capabilities, underscoring its universal appeal in modernizing air forces.

The KIZILELMA platform itself is a closely watched entrant in this evolving field. Developed by Baykar, a firm that has gained international recognition for its highly effective TB2 and Akıncı strike drones, KIZILELMA is engineered as a low-observable, jet-powered uncrewed combat aircraft. Its design parameters include the ability to operate from short runways and, in later variants, to deploy from Turkey’s TCG Anadolu amphibious assault ship, signifying its potential for naval aviation applications.

The choice to pair the KIZILELMA with the Leonardo M-346 is a strategic one. The M-346, a versatile trainer and light combat aircraft, is already in service with several air forces globally and forms the backbone of Italy’s International Flight Training School. This pairing provides both companies with an efficient and relatively affordable route to mature complex crewed-uncrewed teaming concepts on established platforms, before scaling these advanced technologies and tactics to higher-end, more expensive fighter aircraft.

Development efforts for the K-SWARM algorithms and tactics were distributed across specialized facilities. Leonardo confirmed that its Avionic and Flight Control Innovation Labs, alongside its product capability and concept laboratory (PC2LAB) in Turin, were instrumental in this work, with findings linked to an M-346 Full Mission Simulator in Venegono for extensive virtual testing. Baykar, for its part, integrated advanced smart fleet autonomy capabilities directly into the C-UT algorithms, stating that KIZILELMA’s inherent autonomy features significantly streamlined the overall integration process, leading to the successful live trials.

The successful completion of the first live testing phase for the K-SWARM program represents a pivotal step in the evolution of modern air warfare, with profound implications across military strategy, technological development, and international defense dynamics.

Transforming Air Combat: Crewed-uncrewed teaming (C-UT) is poised to fundamentally alter how air forces operate. By enabling manned fighters to command and coordinate multiple uncrewed wingmen, air forces can achieve a significant ‘force multiplier’ effect. This means a single human pilot can effectively control a squadron-like formation, greatly expanding combat reach, situational awareness, and engagement capabilities. These uncrewed assets can perform dangerous reconnaissance, conduct electronic warfare, serve as decoys, or deliver precision strikes, all while reducing the risk to human pilots and expensive manned aircraft. This operational flexibility could allow smaller air forces to project greater power or enable larger forces to conduct more complex, multi-domain operations.

Strategic Advantages and Cost Efficiency: The integration of advanced uncrewed combat aircraft like KIZILELMA with manned platforms offers compelling strategic advantages. Drones generally possess lower acquisition and operational costs compared to cutting-edge manned fighter jets. This cost efficiency allows for the deployment of more numerous assets, potentially overwhelming adversaries or conserving high-value manned platforms for critical roles. Furthermore, uncrewed aircraft can endure longer missions and operate in environments too hazardous for human pilots, thereby enhancing survivability and mission success rates for the overall force package.

Accelerated Technological Advancement and Global Race: This collaboration between Leonardo and Baykar highlights the rapid pace of innovation in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and secure networking within the defense sector. The K-SWARM program is a testament to the global competitive landscape in advanced military technology, mirroring similar efforts by major powers like the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Spain. Success in this domain is crucial for maintaining a technological edge and ensuring national security in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.

Geopolitical and Industrial Implications: For Turkey, Baykar’s prominent role in developing the KIZILELMA and its integration into a sophisticated C-UT system solidifies the nation’s position as a significant player in advanced drone technology, moving beyond its already successful TB2 and Akıncı models. This boosts Turkey’s domestic defense industry capabilities and export potential. For Italy and Leonardo, the program underscores their commitment to cutting-edge aerospace innovation and international partnerships, potentially enhancing interoperability within NATO, given both nations’ membership. This collaboration also showcases how individual NATO members are driving innovation that could benefit the alliance as a whole, even outside formally structured NATO programs.

Ethical Considerations and Future Doctrine: As autonomy in warfare advances, programs like K-SWARM inevitably raise important ethical and regulatory questions. While the current setup maintains a human “in the loop” for command and control, the increasing sophistication of autonomous algorithms prompts ongoing debate about the extent of machine decision-making in lethal operations. The development of C-UT systems will necessitate new military doctrines, training protocols, and international agreements to ensure responsible deployment and oversight of these powerful new capabilities.
