Portuguese Air Force to Integrate Tekever AR5 Uncrewed Aircraft for Maritime Surveillance
Lisbon, Portugal – Tekever, a European aerospace and defense company, has secured a contract with the Portuguese Air Force for the supply of its AR5 uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) for maritime surveillance operations. The agreement, publicly announced by the company, includes the delivery of the aircraft, a ground control station, the ATLAS mission system, and comprehensive operator training.
Initial delivery and the establishment of initial operational capability for the AR5 are scheduled for September of this year. To support this timeline, the first phase of training for Portuguese Air Force personnel is also planned for completion by September. A subsequent, second phase of training will follow in October, specifically designed to consolidate operational readiness and ensure full integration of the new system into the Air Force’s operational protocols.
According to Tekever, the AR5 platforms will be deployed for a broad spectrum of missions, encompassing maritime surveillance, security, and defense tasks. A key focus will be the monitoring of Portugal’s extensive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which is vital for national interests. It boasts an impressive endurance of up to 20 hours, enabling prolonged surveillance missions, and can carry a payload of up to 50 kilograms. A critical feature of the AR5 is its integration of satellite communications, which permits operations far beyond the traditional radio line of sight, greatly extending its operational range.
