This fiscal period, the United Kingdom plans to allocate over £400 million to extended-reach precision and supersonic armaments, as the government aims to expand collaborative missile development initiatives with principal European partners.
In a declaration released on February 13, the Ministry of Defence stated this investment would back an array of joint ventures with France, Germany, and Italy. The emphasis will be on crafting future-era deep strike weapons, intended to fortify NATO’s deterrent capability and enhance Britain’s capacity to engage distant, significant objectives.
Pivotal to this endeavor is the Stratus programme, a collaborative UK-France-Italy undertaking aimed at creating a covert successor for the Storm Shadow missile. As stated by the MOD, the project is focusing on both stealthy and rapid projectile versions, already supporting over 1,300 specialized positions within the UK. The Defence Ministry noted that the armaments being crafted are designed to neutralize high-value targets, strike adversary naval vessels, and incapacitate opposing aerial defense networks.
In parallel, the administration noted that progress is also being made on an extended-reach assault initiative with Germany, with a new collaborative investigative stage anticipated to commence shortly. This endeavor is connected with the Trinity House Agreement, signed in 2024, which established a structure for enhanced UK-German defence cooperation. The forthcoming armament system, termed “Deep Precision Strike”, is projected to possess a reach beyond 2,000 km and is scheduled for operational deployment in the 2030s. The MOD characterized it as potentially one of the foremost sophisticated armament systems ever conceived by the UK.
Secretary of Defence John Healey remarked that the fresh allocation mirrors the insights from the Ukrainian conflict and the imperative to fortify partner capabilities in the presence of escalating dangers. “To confront this emerging age of increasing perils, robust force, firm partnerships, and resolute statecraft are essential.” He further remarked: “The conflict in Ukraine illustrates the critical effect of extended-reach accurate armaments, prompting the UK to intensify its efforts, allocating over £400 million for long-range and hypersonic weaponry this year.”
Healey mentioned that the UK’s collaboration with Germany, France, and Italy would aid in providing sophisticated novel capacities for NATO. “In concert with Germany, France, and Italy, we shall furnish advanced armaments designed to safeguard the UK and NATO, bolster dissuasion, and forge a renewed framework for European stability.”
The MOD stated that the allocation for supersonic armaments will encompass essential technological advancement, terrestrial and aerial trials, and backing for scholastic instruction, including advanced academic pursuits.
This disclosure is made prior to the Munich Security Conference, an event where Healey is slated to engage in dialogues with European and global counterparts on extended-reach armament initiatives, sectoral collaboration, and ongoing aid to Ukraine.
