During March, merely one series of actions is sufficient to alter the entire game — even within secondary school basketball.
During the Iowa Class 4A state championship competition held Thursday evening, the Dallas Center-Grimes female hoops squad produced a conclusion evoking the memory of Reggie Miller’s rapid-fire eight points scored within nine seconds during Game 1 of the 1995 Eastern Conference finals.
Confronting potential ousting in the penultimate round, the squad from Dallas Center-Grimes saw itself behind Norwalk 42-38 as only 35.9 seconds were left on the clock in normal play.
Dallas Center-Grimes held the ball from their own baseline prior to an inbound pass to a sprinting Ava Smid, who converted an uncontested layup, thereby reducing the deficit to merely two points.
Within the context of secondary school basketball, the game clock continues running following a successful shot. Yet, Smid did not permit that detail to impede her.
Following the score, Norwalk initiated play from out of bounds, possessing two remaining timeouts. Smid relentlessly pressured her opponent during the inbound attempt, ultimately achieving a turnover followed by a quick bank shot that leveled the score.
Norwalk once more put the ball into play — and yet again, Smid secured an additional steal. On this occasion, she completed a subsequent layup despite being fouled, earning continuation, to push Dallas Center-Grimes ahead, 44-42.
“Those were the most rapid six points I have ever observed,” remarked head coach Adam Jones, referring to Smid’s valorous deeds.
“My intention was solely to guard her, and by some means, I gained possession and converted a score on each occasion,” Smid stated, beaming.
Tessa Jones, a guard for Dallas Center-Grimes, characterized the sequence as “unbelievable,” as every successful shot by Smid electrified the arena increasingly.
“Likely the most astonishing three seconds I’ve experienced,” Tessa Jones commented.
Even though the contest has ended, Smid continues to reside within that specific timeframe.
“I don’t even perceive that we are advancing to the state championship presently. I sense my mind is still immersed in the match,” Smid conveyed.
Her final stat line for the match included 16 markers, six ball recoveries, and five boards.
Dallas Center-Grimes secured victory in the semifinal encounter by a score of 47-42, thereby progressing to the statewide final and prolonging their string of consecutive victories to 15.
They are scheduled to compete in the final contest on Saturday with aspirations of claiming their second state-level crown.
