Cooper Flagg, a front-court player for the Dallas Mavericks, established himself as the youngest athlete in NBA history to achieve a 50-point performance. The rookie netted 51 points during Friday’s 138-127 home defeat against the Orlando Magic.
Flagg, who is merely 19 years and 103 days old, was briefly withdrawn from the game late in the fourth quarter after accumulating 45 points. This decision was made by assistant coach Frank Vogel, who was deputizing for the ejected head coach, Jason Kidd.
Nevertheless, upon his re-entry, Flagg sank a three-pointer from the corner. He then secured his 50 points with a field goal and an accompanying foul, successfully converting the ensuing free throw before departing the match to a resounding standing ovation. He concluded the fourth quarter with 24 points.
Flagg demonstrated stellar shooting, connecting on 19 of 30 attempts from the field. This included converting 6 of 9 shots from beyond the arc, and he was flawless, making all seven of his free throw attempts.
He becomes the ninth first-year player to register 50 points or more in a single contest. Furthermore, he is the initial one to accomplish such a feat since Brandon Jennings posted 55 points during the 2009-10 campaign, according to data compiled by ESPN Research.
