Leicester have failed in their bid to reverse a six-point penalty due to violating financial rules, placing the team in a critical struggle to escape demotion.
The sanction, initially imposed by an impartial committee earlier this year, stands firm after the challenge was dismissed.
This had already caused Leicester to slip down the standings, and their situation has deteriorated further, as the team currently occupies a spot within the Championship’s demotion area and has fewer fixtures left to recover.
Issuing a declaration after the ruling, Leicester stated: “With this issue now concluded and five league matches yet to be played, everyone connected with the club is entirely concentrating on the upcoming fixtures and on determining the course of our campaign through our performances on the field.”
“We acknowledge that this has been an arduous phase, and we extend our gratitude to our fans for the steadfast support they consistently provide to the squad.”
“Our current duty is to ensure these concluding matches are tackled with the concentration and determination that our present circumstances necessitate.”
The instance pertains to infringements of the Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) linked to the 2023-24 season, a period when the team was participating beyond the premier division. While initially accused by the Premier League, the affair was managed by the EFL subsequent to Leicester’s descent.
A crucial aspect of Leicester’s rebuttal focused on the appropriate evaluation of their financial timeframe, contending it should encompass 36 months instead of 37 because of a postponement in filing their financial records.
Nevertheless, the committee decided unfavorably against them, determining that the club had surpassed the allowable loss limit by £20.8 million.
The challenge was filed soon after the initial penalty, yet its unsuccessful outcome means Leicester must achieve a robust conclusion to the campaign to avert consecutive demotions. Their recent performance has offered minimal reassurance, having secured only a single victory in their past 12 games across all contests.
