Vinicius Jr found himself embroiled in another instance of purported racism as Real Madrid triumphed over Benfica
Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni has refuted claims of racially insulting Real Madrid ace Vinicius Jr, asserting that the Brazilian “misunderstood” his remarks during yesterday evening’s Champions League match.
The initial match of the tie was halted for eight minutes after Vinicius netted a magnificent goal, putting Madrid ahead six minutes into the second half.
As the players geared up to resume play, Vinicius swiftly approached the referee to allege Prestianni uttered a racist epithet while obscuring his mouth with his jersey.
He subsequently engaged in a discussion with Benfica coach Jose Mourinho. The contest concluded 1-0, granting Madrid the upper hand as they journey to the Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg fixture next week.

What allegations are Prestianni facing?
The Argentine is alleged to have employed the term “mono,” which translates to monkey in Spanish.
Nevertheless, the 20-year-old maintained firmly that this was not the case, stating Vinicius Jr had mistakenly understood his comment.
Posting on social media platforms, Prestianni conveyed: “I wish to clarify that I never once insulted Vinícius Jr, who, regrettably, misinterpreted something he believes he overheard. I’ve never been racist towards anyone, and I lament the menaces directed at me from the Real Madrid players.”
What did Vinicius Jr declare?
In an Instagram update, he articulated: “Racists are, primarily, dastards. They find it necessary to cover their mouths with their jerseys to expose their feebleness. Yet, they enjoy the safeguard of others who, supposedly, bear a duty to sanction them. Nothing that transpired today is unfamiliar in my existence or in my team’s journey.
“I was cautioned with a yellow card for my goal celebration. I still fail to comprehend why. On another note, it was merely a flawed procedure that achieved nothing.”
Mourinho attributes fault to Vinicius Jr for his triumphant display
Mourinho has faced criticism for implying Vinicius Jr showed contempt for the local supporters through his excessive celebration of a superb shot.
When questioned if he had provoked the home fans, the Portuguese coach responded: “Indeed. I am inclined to believe so.”
“It should represent the exhilarating instant of the game, an incredible strike. Sadly, he wasn’t merely content with scoring that breathtaking goal. When one nets such a goal, one celebrates in a dignified manner.”
The ex-Real Madrid manager also asserted that Benfica can never be labeled as an institution prone to racism due to its iconic footballer, Eusebio.
Mourinho further stated: “I conveyed to [Vinicius], when you net a goal like that, you simply celebrate and retreat. When he was contesting claims of racism, I informed him the most significant figure in this club’s history [Eusebio] was black.
“This club is, by definition, anything but racist. If in his perception there was something regarding that matter, this is Benfica.
“They [Vinicius and Prestianni] presented differing accounts. But I do not credit either version fully. I aim to be an impartial observer.”

What transpires next?
The match official’s submission will be forwarded to European football’s administrative authority, UEFA, who will then make a ruling.
A UEFA declaration noted: “The formal accounts from yesterday evening’s fixtures are currently undergoing assessment. Where incidents are documented, investigations commence, and should they result in penalties being imposed, they are published on the UEFA disciplinary website.”
Vinicius Jr’s colleagues denounce Prestianni
Vinicius Jr has been exposed to racial insults previously, and his fellow players were swift to defend the 25-year-old.
Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe stated: “I have never encountered such an occurrence, and in these kinds of significant issues, it’s crucial to articulate precisely and avoid vague statements.
“I hold profound regard for Benfica and their manager, who is among the greatest in footballing annals and achieved renown with Real Madrid. However, as I see it, this player [Prestianni] ought not to participate in the Champions League anymore.
“We must not condone that a player who features in Europe’s premier tournament acts in such a manner. Let us entrust it to UEFA, who consistently endeavor to act. Now they face a weighty matter, and I anticipate they will take action.”
Madrid’s England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold commented: “What has transpired is a stain on the sport and eclipsed the display, as well as a stunning strike.
“Vini has been exposed to such incidents on several occasions during his professional life. To spoil an evening such as this for our team is an outrage. It is unacceptable in football or society. It is repugnant.”
Henry and Seedorf add their voices to the condemnation
Television analysts Thierry Henry and Clarence Seedorf also expressed their views.
Henry, on assignment for CBS, stated: “I can empathize with what Vinicius Junior is experiencing. That occurred to me frequently during play. Occasionally, you feel isolated because it’s going to be your account versus his, as we are unaware of his exact words.
“He covered his mouth with his jersey. Evidently, already, he appears questionable because he wished to conceal from onlookers what he said. Let’s see how courageous Prestianni is – reveal your statement.”
Ex-Madrid central player Seedorf was reproachful towards Mourinho specifically. He conveyed on TNT Sports: “I believe he is presently affected by sentiment.
“He’s implying it’s acceptable, when Vinicius incites you, to utter racial abuse – and I think that is utterly incorrect.
“We should under no circumstances condone racially motivated insults. Vinicius has grown weary of that unwarranted conduct from people. I know Mourinho deep down would concur with me, but he articulated his thoughts somewhat poorly.”
