Pakistan was left deeply disheartened.
Despite securing a five-run victory over Sri Lanka in their concluding Super 8s fixture, Pakistan’s team, led by captain Salman Ali Agha, faced ouster from the T20 World Cup, prompting Agha to express regret over losing the coin toss.
To secure the second spot in Group 2, ahead of New Zealand, Agha’s squad commenced the match requiring a substantial shift in their net run rate.
Having conceded the toss and been directed to bat first, Pakistan fostered hopes of realizing their objective through a remarkable display, registering a total of 212-8.
Sahibzada Farhan amassed a century from 60 deliveries, striking nine fours and five sixes; his initial stand of 176 with Fakhar Zaman (84) marked the highest opening partnership for any wicket throughout the annals of the T20 World Cup.
Subsequently, however, Pakistan struggled significantly, with no other batsman managing to score double figures.
To advance to the semi-final stage, Pakistan’s total necessitated limiting Sri Lanka to a maximum of 147 runs.
Nonetheless, the co-hosts confirmed Pakistan’s ouster as Captain Dusan Shanaka’s undefeated 76 and a fifty from Pavan Rathnayake (58) propelled them to a total of 207-6.
Agha stated, “Losing the toss meant it would inevitably present a difficulty [bowling second] owing to the dew.”
He continued, “Subsequently, it was an excellent wicket, and limiting them to under 148 was proving to be an arduous task. Yet we made an effort. I believe had I won the toss, the outcome might have differed.”
New Zealand will now experience a sense of ease, their loss inflicted by England having rendered them anxious observers of Pakistan’s contest.
The Black Caps will now confront the victor of Group 1 in their penultimate match. That victor is expected to be South Africa, who are set to compete against Zimbabwe in their conclusive Super 8s fixture on Sunday. India will play against West Indies in a decisive encounter for the subsequent advancement position from Group 1, with the victor likely to face a semi-final encounter with England.
