LOS ANGELES — The head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers stated he was unaware of the reason why a tense sideline interaction between JJ Redick and Luka Doncic, which had widely circulated across the internet, merited such significant notice.
“I’m unsure why it gained such widespread online visibility,” Redick commented ahead of Tuesday’s game where the Lakers welcomed the New Orleans Pelicans. “To me, it appeared quite ordinary.”
The specific video footage captured the moment during L.A.’s dominant 129-101 away triumph against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday. Doncic, having been substituted from the match, headed towards his bench seat, bypassing Redick’s attempted fist bump.
Redick pursued Doncic along the sideline, and the two exchanged some fiery words before Redick retreated towards the mid-court line. Subsequently, as Redick left the immediate area and Doncic leaped to his feet to further vocally challenge his mentor, Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt rose from his position and clapped his hands to create a separation between them.
Redick remarked, “Frankly, I didn’t attach much importance to it at that moment, and I don’t believe Luka did either. Our connection is excellent, and I hold our bond in high esteem. I find that such incidents naturally unfold. Not during every match, but quite frequently. Sometimes it’s necessary to revisit these matters with a player, or with a fellow team member. Occasionally, they occur between individual players.
“It’s an intensely competitive environment. And in this specific instance, two individuals were endeavoring to secure a basketball victory and remain in agreement on pertinent matters.”
Prior to the Golden State matchup, L.A. had suffered a string of three consecutive defeats, notably including narrow losses in the final moments to Orlando and Phoenix.
When questioned about the Redick-Doncic incident, an insider from the Lakers organization downplayed any profound significance, relaying to ESPN, “Show me a marquee player in the NBA, amidst a three-game slide, who isn’t feeling exasperated.”
An individual associated with Doncic informed ESPN that the pair “share a robust, intimate bond,” further asserting that they “possess intense competitive spirits and constantly challenge one another.”
Doncic concluded the Warriors contest having tallied 26 points and 8 assists. L.A. also secured victory in their subsequent game, defeating the Sacramento Kings 128-104, with Doncic amassing 28 points and 9 assists.
Redick fielded inquiries regarding his approach to managing external clamor—specifically, a frenzied segment of supporters misconstruing a tense instant with one of his players as signifying anything beyond its face value—all while he endeavors to concentrate on guiding his squad.
“It simply appears typical, which likely contributes to why I desired to lead the Lakers,” Redick conveyed with a chuckle. “I discussed it with Luka; in fact, we shared a laugh regarding it. My sentiment was, ‘I sensed no strain.’ And his response was, ‘No, it held no significance for me.’
“One handles it and proceeds. I believe the truth is, everyone will perpetually hold a viewpoint. Ever since professional athletics emerged, individuals have continuously harbored perspectives. There have always been sports discussions, impromptu analyses in informal settings, and online forums. Everyone has formulated a viewpoint. Currently, every person’s viewpoint is more readily obtainable. It’s merely magnified presently, yet it remains commonplace.”
