Ben White granted England an advantage and then conceded the crucial spot-kick, as the English squad concluded a rather bland tie with Uruguay at Wembley Stadium in an exhibition game preceding the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

White, whose England international journey had been paused after the Arsenal defender departed a camp due to a dispute with the assistant manager at that time, Steve Holland, in 2021, nudged the ball home from close quarters with nine minutes left, the score validated following a Video Assistant Referee check.

A subsequent examination resulted in White being deemed to have obstructed Federico Vinas within the hosts’ box during injury time of the second half, enabling Federico Valverde to powerfully convert the 94th-minute leveling goal.

England are scheduled to play next against Japan in an exhibition match at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday (19:45 BST). Uruguay will face Algeria in Turin on the same day (19:30).

Analysis: England delivered an unmemorable World Cup preparatory game

The primary noteworthy event arguably occurred early in the second half, when Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo aggressively tackled England midfielder Phil Foden.

“You rarely witness such challenges without a sending off,” England defender Harry Maguire informed ITV Football.

“It was somewhat perplexing [for Ben White]… he was outstanding upon his entry. That’s an exceptionally lenient spot-kick. He’s consistently performed well throughout the week.”

Previous England custodian Paul Robinson stated England coach Thomas Tuchel was “utterly incensed” about the foul on Foden.

“Araujo came in extremely tardily and made contact with Foden,” Robinson informed BBC Sport. “He made a robust impact on him.”

Foden rejoined the field of play but was among many English squad members to deliver subdued performances. “There are encouraging aspects for Tuchel to consider,” Robinson remarked.

“[Marcus] Rashford – exhibiting bursts of brilliance on the left flank – displayed promising offensive ambition. It’s clear that [Dominic] Solanke has exerted immense effort and attempted to unleash his attempts at goal.

“Defensively, England remained undisturbed. [Goalkeeper James] Trafford was largely inactive. We gained no new insights from this match that we didn’t possess beforehand.”

England squad against Uruguay

A few unexpected inclusions were present in England’s starting XI, which was led by Jordan Henderson.

James Trafford began as goalkeeper instead of Jordan Pickford, whose Everton colleague James Garner earned his debut appearance in midfield.

Djed Spence and Tino Livramento were selected for the defensive wide positions, with both capable of operating as right and left-back.

Livramento’s Newcastle colleague Lewis Hall was among the substitutes, implying he was probable to feature from the outset against Japan.

Maguire and Fikayo Tomori formed the central defensive pair, with John Stones said to be managing a calf issue.

Perhaps the most notable unexpected decision was Solanke’s deployment in attack in preference to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has enjoyed an excellent campaign for Leeds United. Solanke has frequently found it difficult with relegation-threatened Tottenham.

England starting XI: James Trafford; Djed Spence, Harry Maguire, Fikayo Tomori, Tino Livramento; Jordan Henderson, James Garner; Noni Madueke, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford; Dominic Solanke

England substitutes: Jordan Pickford, Lewis Hall, Adam Wharton, John Stones, Cole Palmer, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Kobbie Mainoo, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Harvey Barnes, Jarrod Bowen, Jason Steele

Uruguay squad against England

Uruguay starting XI: Fernando Muslera; Guillermo Varela, Ronald Araujo, Mathias Olivera, Joaquin Piquerez; Manuel Ugarte, Federico Valverde, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Agustin Canobbio, Maximiliano Araujo, Rodrigo Aguirre

Uruguay substitutes: Sergio Rochet, Juan Manuel Sanabria, Santiago Mele, Nicolas De La Cruz, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Facundo Torres, Jose Maria Gimenez, Brian Rodriguez, Sebastian Caceres, Facundo Pellistri, Matias Vina, Federico Vinas, Emiliano Martinez, Darwin Nunez, Nicolas Fonseca.

This match occurred 26 years and 32 days after his most recent game at Wembley, setting an unparalleled duration for a manager in matches against England – Bernd Stange held the earlier benchmark (25 years and 32 days, Sept 1984 with East Germany – Oct 2009 with Belarus)
