SAN FRANCISCO — Kristaps Porzingis commenced his inaugural appearance for the Warriors on Thursday evening, participating in a 121-110 home defeat against the Boston Celtics, a contest that lacked any true competitiveness.
This marked merely Porzingis’ eighteenth match of the current season and his initial one since January 7th, a period when he was affiliated with the Atlanta Hawks, almost a full month prior to his trade to the Warriors at the transfer deadline.
Consequently, the Warriors cautiously managed his reintegration, introducing Porzingis as a reserve and restricting his participation to seventeen minutes. Porzingis began sluggishly, failing to convert his initial pair of attempts and finding it arduous to contend with the Celtics’ relentless offensive onslaught.
The Celtics surpassed the Warriors in scoring 38-19 during the second period and maintained a 32-point advantage when Porzingis returned to the court towards the conclusion of the third quarter. Stellar Celtics player Jaylen Brown posted 23 points, 15 rebounds, and 13 assists.
“Boston proved formidable,” stated Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “They are experiencing a remarkable campaign. Currently, they operate like an unstoppable mechanism.”
Nonetheless, the Warriors mounted a comeback and, for a short duration, posed a threat to reduce Boston’s advantage to under ten points, partially attributable to a Porzingis offensive burst. He sank a pair of distant three-pointers, executed two effective post-up plays, and concluded with twelve points. The Warriors surpassed the Celtics in scoring by fifteen points with Porzingis participating in the second half, a significant turnaround from his minus-nineteen rating during his initial half of play.
“He simply appeared more at ease and acclimatized,” Kerr observed.
Porzingis communicated his wish to augment his playing time “with utmost haste.”
“Even this evening, I would have preferred more time on the court,” Porzingis remarked. “Even if I am fatigued during play, I nonetheless desire to challenge my limits. However, I recognize the necessity to proceed incrementally. Hopefully, I can gain a few additional minutes in the subsequent contest.”
The Warriors are scheduled to confront the Denver Nuggets on Sunday (12:30 p.m. PT, ABC). They will continue to be deprived of Jimmy Butler, whose ACL tear concludes his season, and Stephen Curry, whose recurrent right knee ailment will mandate his absence for a minimum of four matches.
Deprived of their top two athletes, the struggling Warriors have seen their record fall to 29-27 and urgently require Porzingis to establish momentum and swiftly intensify his performance to provide a crucial offensive impetus.
“I felt satisfactory,” Porzingis stated. “I am far from being in peak physical condition. Nevertheless, considering it’s my initial game after an extended absence, and I’m regaining some vitality, I feel quite well.”
