For a solitary individual, the task of ranking 50 distinct items can prove to be a lengthy and wearisome undertaking. For a collective, however, this process is considerably simplified. Instead of each participant submitting an entire catalog, we can decompose the rankings into easily manageable segments, then reassemble them once an adequate number of votes has been gathered. To accomplish this, we are employing an adapted ELO algorithm.
Through the ELO system, every item commences with an initial score, which subsequently undergoes modification during each paired confrontation. The alteration in points is contingent upon the score of the opposing item in the pairing; triumphing over the highest-ranked item will yield a greater reward than defeating the lowest, and the inverse applies to the penalties for losses. (ELO was originally devised for chess, a game featuring more definitive victory conditions than mere ‘user preference,’ so we have fine-tuned the standard version to soften the impact of significant upsets.)
Thus, every instance you make a selection between any two items from our Apple Top 50 list, you are contributing to the broader community’s overall rankings. We extend our gratitude!
