OpenAI’s inaugural device launch is slated to be an intelligent audio gadget equipped with a camera, with an anticipated price point between $200 and $300, as reported by The Information. This device will possess the ability to discern objects such as “items situated on a proximate surface or discussions occurring among individuals nearby,” The Information further states. Moreover, it will incorporate a facial identification mechanism akin to Face ID, enabling users to make acquisitions.

OpenAI purchased Jony Ive’s hardware enterprise in the preceding May, in an agreement valued at almost $6.5 billion. Particulars regarding their gadgetry have surfaced piecemeal in the interim, revealing, for instance, that the initial contraption will not be a wearable item and its availability to consumers is not expected before March 2027. Additionally, other technology manufacturers are extensively investing in AI-driven devices — such as Apple, Ive’s previous company, which is purportedly developing its proprietary intelligent eyewear, a pendant enhanced by artificial intelligence, and camera-equipped AirPods.

Beyond the intelligent audio device, OpenAI is “potentially” developing intelligent eyewear and an intelligent lighting fixture, according to The Information. (Apple could also be developing an intelligent lamp.) However, OpenAI’s eyewear may not enter widespread manufacturing until 2028. Furthermore, while OpenAI has fabricated preliminary versions of devices such as the intelligent lamp, The Information notes that their eventual release remains “uncertain” and that OpenAI’s strategies for these gadgets are in their preliminary phases.
