The GSM Association (GSMA) recently disclosed that its finalized RCS Universal Profile 4.0 standard introduces a feature known as Messaging‑Initiated Video Calls (MIVC). This development could ultimately enable individuals utilizing iPhones and Android devices to conduct cross-platform video conversations directly from their communication applications, by transforming one-on-one or group RCS discussions into visual communications.

“MIVC is designed to maintain the flow of dialogue by enabling participants to enter an active video conference even if they missed its commencement, and to integrate MIVC records within the chat history,” states the GSMA. The association adds that, “Upon its deployment, MIVC establishes the foundation for the inaugural natively integrated video conferencing capability, ensuring seamless operation across a diverse array of gadgets and communication infrastructures.”

Nevertheless, neither Apple nor Google has yet confirmed their endorsement of this functionality. Consequently, it remains ambiguous whether, or precisely when, individuals will gain the ability to convert cross-platform text exchanges into video calls directly within their messaging applications. Requests for a statement from Apple and Google received no prompt response.

Furthermore, the RCS Universal Profile 4.0 additionally incorporates textual styling options, enabling individuals to apply embellishments such as bold, italic, and strikethrough to the content of their communications. It also facilitates the exchange of “enhanced fidelity” audio, visual content, and pictures.
