As per Reuters, an anonymous international cyber-attacker gained unauthorized entry to the FBI’s regional office in New York in 2023, subsequently breaching records concerning the agency’s inquiry into the convicted sexual offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
The news service referenced an individual knowledgeable about the intrusion, along with legal filings, indicating that the cyberattack exploited a server at the Child Exploitation Forensic Laboratory within the FBI’s New York Field Office. This server had been unintentionally left exposed by an FBI special agent assigned to the matter. The compromise “involved sifting through specific documents related to the Epstein investigation,” a judicial paper stated.
The FBI informed Reuters that the event constituted “a singular occurrence” and affirmed that it had curtailed the attacker’s entry and halted the intrusion. The FBI offered no prompt reply to TechCrunch’s inquiry for a statement.
An informant advised Reuters that the cyber-intruder was unaware of their penetration into the FBI until agents requested their participation in a video conference, at which point they displayed their identification to the attacker.
