Handala’s subsequent assertion, however—that it breached the FBI—currently appears to be untrue. All indications suggest Handala compromised Patel’s older, private Gmail account. Handala, generally thought to be a “hacktivist” proxy for Iran’s MOIS intelligence agency, asserted on its website that the emails comprised confidential data. However, the correspondence initially examined by WIRED didn’t seem pertinent to any state affairs. Nevertheless, TechCrunch discovered that Patel seemingly redirected certain emails from his Ministry of Justice account to his Gmail in 2014.

Cybersecurity experts labeled Handala to WIRED as an “advantage-seeking” hacker collective whose digital assaults and intrusions are frequently orchestrated more for their publicity worth than their strategic consequences. Despite this, Handala has effectively exploited Patel’s mortifying compromise. In its communique, the group declared: “To the entire world, we announce: the FBI is merely an appellation, and behind this name, there exists no genuine protection.” They added, “If your director can be made vulnerable so readily, what level of security can be anticipated from your subordinate personnel?”

Handala Hackers Put $50 Million Bounty on Trump and Netanyahu’s Heads

To find additional proof of Handala’s grandiloquent pronouncements, one need only examine a recent post on its website from earlier this week (which we are deliberately not linking). This post put forth a $50 million reward for anyone able to “assassinate” US head of state Donald Trump and Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu. The hackers’ communique stated: “This significant reward will be bestowed, directly and confidently, upon any individual or group courageous enough to demonstrate genuine action against oppression,” also including an invitation for potential killers to contact them via the secure messaging application, Session. “All our modes of interaction and transaction conduits employ cutting-edge encryption and anonymization technologies; your security and discretion are completely assured.”

Handala clarified that this reward was issued in response to a declaration regarding Handala published on the US Ministry of Justice website the previous week. That declaration had provided a $10 million pecuniary incentive for particulars leading to the identity or whereabouts of anyone who perpetrates “nefarious digital operations against vital American infrastructure” on behalf of a foreign state.

In its rejoinder, Handala penned, “Our communication is unambiguous: If you truly possess the resolve and the capability, come and locate us!” “We dread no confrontation and are ready to counter every assault with even enhanced intensity.”

An additional publication on its website this week saw Handala claiming to have disclosed the personal information of 28 engineers at defense contractor Lockheed Martin operating in Israel. They menaced these individuals with physical injury if they didn’t evacuate the nation within two days. Nevertheless, when WIRED attempted to dial the contact numbers included in Handala’s disclosed data, the majority proved inoperable.

Donncha Ó Cearbhaill, chief of security research at Amnesty International, likewise asserts his team has observed no indication of a victorious assault against a Lockdown Mode-equipped iPhone. Citizen Lab, which has recorded several victorious surveillance software intrusions against iPhones, states that none entailed a Lockdown Mode circumvention. Furthermore, in two instances, its investigators discovered the function proactively thwarted aggressions against NSO Group’s Pegasus and Intellexa’s Predator. Google researchers, meanwhile, discovered a single surveillance software variant that merely ceases infection endeavors when it perceives the functionality is active.

Lockdown Mode operates by deactivating frequently leveraged iPhone functions, e.g., the majority of message accessory categories and attributes such as hyperlinks and hyperlink previews. Incoming video calls are prevented unless the individual has formerly contacted that party within the preceding month. When the iPhone is secured, it impedes interconnections with computers and peripherals. The gadget will not spontaneously connect to unsecured Wi-Fi networks, and connectivity for 2G and 3G is deactivated. Apple has furthermore increased by twofold the rewards for investigators who identify any Lockdown Mode circumvention, with compensation amounting to up to $2 million.
