E Ink screens are no longer confined solely to e-readers. Currently, they find utility in digital picture frames, mobile phones, and even the pricing labels seen on supermarket racks. The VidaBay’s Classic Plus NFC E-Ink Fridge Magnet, designed to resemble a classic Polaroid snapshot, integrates the very same energy-efficient color E Ink panels found in those electronic price markers. Its primary function, however, is to exhibit images from your smartphone, remarkably, without any need for a battery.

These compact digital picture displays can now be procured worldwide, offered in hues of white, red, or yellow, directly from VidaBay’s web-based shop. They are priced at $35.99 per unit (presently reduced to $29.99), or can be acquired as a bundle of three for $99.99 (now marked down to $86.99).

A key advantage among the numerous distinctive features of E Ink’s e-paper screen technology is its minimal power consumption, drawing energy solely when content (whether text or image) on the display is altered. Leveraging this trait, these diminutive displays operate without an integrated battery. Instead, the entire power supply required to refresh their E Ink panels is sourced from your smartphone’s NFC chip during the wireless transfer of pictures via VidaBay’s cellular application. After a fresh image is exhibited, it remains visible perpetually.

However, a notable drawback exists concerning VidaBay’s E Ink Refrigerator Magnets. As highlighted by Good E-Reader, the color display employed, specifically the E Ink Spectra 3100, is engineered primarily for commercial applications and incorporates merely four distinct color pigments: black, yellow, red, and white. Consequently, in comparison to items such as the Aura Ink digital picture frame, which utilizes an E Ink Spectra 6 panel able to render thousands of hues, the fidelity of color replication on VidaBay’s more compact option will be inferior.
