OpenAI’s chief and co-founder Greg Brockman doesn’t perceive himself as politically inclined, which is astonishing, given he was one of President Trump’s most substantial personal contributors in 2025.

Greg and his spouse, Anna Brockman, contributed $25 million to MAGA Inc—a political action committee endorsing President Trump—in September of the previous year. Furthermore, the couple likewise donated $25 million to a cross-party AI political action committee, Leading the Future, which states its intention to resist politicians that endanger Americans’ “capacity to profit from AI.” The Brockmans have vowed to provide an additional $25 million to Leading the Future in 2026, as revealed by an individual with firsthand insight into the situation.

From Brockman’s perspective, these political contributions align with OpenAI’s core objective established at its inception: to create exceptionally proficient AI technologies and disseminate the advantages across all humankind.

“This mission, from my perspective, is more significant than corporations, surpassing even organizational frameworks,” he remarked in an interview with WIRED. “We are commencing a venture to advance this innovation that will be the single most transformative creation humanity has ever brought forth. Ensuring its proper development and universal accessibility of its advantages, that’s the paramount objective.”

Brockman’s rise as a prominent political contributor represents a distinct shift for a technology executive who, up until a short time ago, had no notable record of political expenditures. The most substantial contribution Brockman had made prior was a $5,400 sum to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Brockman asserts he’s escalating his political contributions partially due to the fact that general sentiment has become adverse to AI. A fresh poll from the Pew Research Center indicates that citizens are “more apprehensive than enthusiastic regarding AI’s growing application in everyday existence.” To Brockman, this has rendered the endorsement of AI-friendly politicians progressively vital.

“There’s a handful of policymakers who I think—even though they understand it’s not widely favored—are bravely asserting, actually, we think [AI] is important for the country,” he states. “I think supporting them is exceptionally crucial. I believe that this technology is something that’s significant for regional societies. I think it’s vital for the United States. I think it’s essential for the globe. And any action I can take to facilitate this technology’s universal advantage is something I shall undertake. In this sense, maybe aiding the collective transcends affiliations with those I happen to work alongside. It’s truly a cause for all humankind.”

Despite his declared objective, Brockman’s contributions could be fueling the adverse perception some people have toward AI. QuitGPT, a movement urging individuals to terminate their ChatGPT memberships due to Brockman’s contribution to Trump, is gathering momentum, with exceeding 700,000 individuals disseminating the appeal electronically or endorsing its promise. On Sunday, actor Mark Ruffalo declared on Instagram his participation in the campaign.

His contributions have also elicited a degree of disquiet within OpenAI’s ranks. While many employees comprehend the company’s requirement to collaborate with state functionaries to forge advanced technology, a perception exists that Brockman is undertaking actions surpassing what is strictly requisite to further OpenAI’s commercial interests. “I personally think Greg’s political donations probably exceed that scope,” says one OpenAI researcher who commented under the proviso of remaining unnamed.

“I think there’s never a unanimous agreement on any decision among all at OpenAI,” Brockman says when queried about his team’s views on the contributions. “Even when our ranks comprised merely ten individuals. We’ve always been a culture devoted to the pursuit of truth. We have this scholarly quest for new insights, and actuality, in essence, disregards personal viewpoints. It solely values verity.”

OpenAI asserts that the Brockmans’ contributions are purely individual, and not indicative of the corporation’s political stance. “The Brockmans’ donation demonstrates their emphasis on AI as a pivotal matter for the nation and the global community throughout this presidential term,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “They offer a distinctive viewpoint concerning the innovation and are particularly involved in this subject.”
